What is a topic sentence?

A topic sentence introduces the main idea of a paragraph and most often used at the beginning of a
paragraph. An effective topic sentence has the following characteristics:
 It summarises the paragraph.
 It uses clear and specific language.
 It encourages your reader to think deeply about the issue or idea.
 It supports your thesis statement.

How to support your main points?


Your main points must be supported with examples and explanations (Supporting Details). A relevant
example supports your main point and makes it stronger. The example you give should be relevant to
the topic and specific. Look at the examples below:
