JUMPSTART

Activity 1: What is Lenz's law?

Lenz's law is associated with the electromagnetic area, since its approach is based on the relation of
changes or tensions produced by variations in magnetic flux property from which these variations are presented in an
opposite to the direction that produces them. In honor of its creator, Lenz's law bears his surname. The physicist
Heinrich Lenz formulated it at the beginning of the 19th century with the aim of conserving energy.

Activity 3: Who am I?

1. INSULATOR- used to keep conductors in place while separating them

from one another and from surrounding structures. They serve as a barrier
between energized parts of an electric circuit, limiting current flow to
wires or other conducting paths.

2. CAPACITATOR- commonly used in electronic circuits to block direct

current while allowing alternating current to flow through. They smooth
the output of power supplies in analog filter networks.

EXPLORE

Self-Practice 1: Predict me!

1. B: No (Current is only generated with a complete circuit.)

2. A: Yes (The complete loop completes a circuit.)
3. B: Counterclockwise (Apply the left-hand rule.)

Self-Practice 2: AC vs DC

In DC, electrons flow in a single direction, or " forward," whereas, in AC, electrons alternate between
going " forward " and going " backward." DC stands for " Direct Current," which refers to voltage or current that
maintains a constant polarity or direction over time. AC stands for " Alternating Current," which refers to voltage or
current that changes polarity or direction over time. Because the current in an AC circuit changes direction, the
voltage in the circuit periodically reverses.

Self-Practice 3: Go round and round!

LC Circuit cyclic pattern

An LC circuit, also called as tuned circuit, is an electric circuit consisting of an inductor and a
capacitator, connected together. If an inductor is connected across a charged capacitor, the voltage across the
capacitor will drive a current through the inductor, building up a magnetic field around it. The voltage across the
capacitor falls to zero as the charge is used up by the current flow.

At this stage, the stored energy in the coil's magnetic field induces a voltage across the coil, because
inductors opposite changes in current. This induced voltage causes a current to begin to recharge the capacitor with
a voltage of opposite polarity to its original charge. When the magnetic field is completely dissipated the current
will stop and the charge will again be stored in the capacitor, with the opposite polarity as before.

DEEPEN

I. Title
Study on the Main Factors of Frequency Variation of LC Resonant Prestress Detection Method
II. LC-circuit explanation
The LC resonant circuit's steel strand stress detection is accomplished by connecting both ends of the steel
strands into the circuit through the conductor. The change in stress of the steel strands causes a change in the
inductance characteristic of the steel strands, which alters the circuit's resonance frequency.
III. LC circuit application
In order to study the effect of permeability on stress detection of strands, the resonant frequency of the
same tension force of 9 mm diameter strands/aluminum strands was measured. Because the maximum tensile
stress of the aluminum strands is 7.8 kN, considering the deformation and safety factors, the tension force of 1
kN is exerted on the strands. For the sake of the authenticity of the experimental data, many groups of
experiments were carried out, so experiments were carried out on steel strands/aluminum strands with different
lengths, ranging from 600 cm to 1650 cm.
Before the experiment, the experimental equipment is debugged, and the pressure sensor is calibrated. The
sensitivity coefficient of the pressure sensor connecting the strain box is set to 0.3846. When the specimen is
relaxed, the display of the strain box is set to 0. When the tension is 1 kN, the resonant frequency of the circuit
is recorded, and each group of experiments is repeated three times. The same experiment was carried out on
steel strands with a diameter of 15.20 mm.
IV. Reflection (what have you realize?)
I realized that it is very important to know which parameters affect the resonant frequency of the stress
through changing. The stress loss of the prestressed steel strands of the bridges in service makes the deflection
of the structure decrease and the main beam crack, which seriously threatens the bearing capacity of the
structure. It is of great significance to realize the detection of steel strand prestress. LC resonance connects the
steel strands as an inductance through the conductor into the circuit and realizes the stress detection of the
prestressed steel strands by testing the resonance frequency of the circuit. The previous research team has
proved that the resonance frequency of the circuit has a good linear correlation with the stress of the steel
strands, and this method has great potential for the stress detection of the prestressed steel strands. As a kind of
magnetic material, the magnetic properties of the steel strands will change when it deforms under the stress.
