VYGOTSKY’S SOCIO-CULTURAL THEORY

LEARNING EXPERIENCES & SELF-ASSESSMENT ACTIVITIES (SAA)

ACTIVITY
1. As a child, recall a skill that you wanted to learn and eventually learned
well, through the help of another person?
When I was younger, I wanted to be a writer because I was fascinated by the
words on paper. I love how people express their feelings and emotions through
writing, and because I am not good at expressing myself, I use the pen as a
friend to help me develop my writing skills. I'm grateful that I met people who
inspired and pushed me to improve my writing skills, particularly in poetry writing.
2. What made you interested to learn the skill?
I admire how some writers relate their feelings to their readers; I am fascinated
by how words can move a person, and this intrigues and influences me to want
to be a person who can affect others' emotions.
3. Who taught or assisted you?
I had this one cousin who I admired the most because of her writing ability, and I
told myself at some point that I wanted to be like her. Eventually, I was pleased
to be able to speak with her and learn some of her writing style and method.
4. Describe how you went about learning the skill.
This cousin of mine attends the same high school as me, and she used to
compete in every event at our school, even in the city category, when it came to
poetry writing, and she always came in first. I was first scared to speak with her
because we are not very close, but knowing that she is nice and approachable
gives me the confidence to discuss writing with her. Our conversation was
extensive, and we discussed virtually everything, and she was the one who
encouraged and pushed me to improve my talents.
ANALYSIS
1. Share your answers in 1-4 with your 3 classmates online.
I choose three students to whom I send a customized message regarding my
activity experience.
2. What factors in the environment influenced you to learn the skill?
My passion in writing, as well as the fact that I have family who are also good
at it, pushed me to study the art. I've been inspired by and admire those
people who express themselves and their perspectives via the words they
write, and I aspire to be like them.
3. Did the person who taught or assisted you make use of scaffolding? If
yes, how?
Yes, my cousin instructed me on how to compose poetry properly. After we
had a conversation, she demonstrated how poetry should be heartfelt and
can have an impact on anyone who reads it by writing the first stanza, she
wrote an introduction that can grab the attention of anyone who reads it, and
then she asked me for an idea that I could give to broaden the topic with her
guidance. She guides me through it all, and once she sees that I can handle it
on my own, she looks for areas where I can improve and makes suggestions
to help me write better.
APPLICATION
An exercise in scaffolding:
1. Choose a skill you are good in.
Drawing, since I really love to draw scenery and anime character as my stress
reliever.
2. Identify an individual to whom you can teach skill.
I chose my younger 17-year-old brother to teach him how to draw because he is
eager to learn.
3. Break down the steps you will take in teaching the skill.
In teaching the skill, the steps that I will execute is:
 Develop a steady grip. The way you hold your tool (pencil, charcoal, etc.)
is important but also highly personal.
 Select your topic.
 Learn to draw diagrams.
 Take notes while sketching
4. Determine how you will use scaffolding.
I'll utilize scaffolding to teach my brother how to draw by first showing him what
he should do and then sharing my prior knowledge of how it should be done
properly. I'll start easy by explaining and demonstrating, then I'll let my brother
draw on his own. Once I see that he can do it correctly, I'll let him perform the
assignment alone, observing and commenting on his work.
5. Teach the skill to individual.
In teaching my brother to draw, I follow all of the steps and use the scaffolding.
6. Describe how the learning activity went.
After completing all of the steps, I can say that the activity was a success
because my brother is very eager to learn, he follows all of my instructions, and
he is very attentive to my actions and the example that I set. Although he has
many questions and clarifications, and he is a little confused about some things,
his work is incredibly good for a beginner, even though it is his first try. I'm
impressed at how quickly my brother picks up new information, and I'm proud of
myself for being able to properly teach him via scaffolding.

APPLICATION
Looking at your answers in the Activity phase of this Module, describe how
these people or circumstances have influenced your attitudes, behavior, and
habits.
Since I was a child, every scenario has been designed to teach me a lesson and bring
me to a realization. I saw how difficult life can be at a young age, having been exploited
in trials from the beginning, witnessing how my parents were nearly split due to third-
party and physical violence. I lived with my Lola when I was five years old, who was
similarly poor and unable to provide food for our table. My childhood was not easy; I
went through things that a normal child would not, and as a result, I became distant
from others; I didn't usually open up; I didn't have friends in school; I became loner and
silent; however, as I grew older and my family became complete again, I noticed how I
changed and my entire system became full of life. I began to make acquaintances and
became more motivated as a result. Despite the problems I face, I use them as
motivation and an eye opener to keep moving forward and to be continuously molded
along the way.
MODULE 10

LEARNING EXPERIENCES & SELF-ASSESSMENT ACTIVITIES (SAA)

ACTIVITY
1. I watch the video on Pro-life anti-abortion video at YouTube.
2. Read the article “Life Before Birth” and answer the following questions:
 What are your feelings and reactions about what you read?
After reading the story, I realize how essential life is; it takes time to develop,
which is why moms should look after themselves in order to protect the life in
their womb.
 Do you agree that which is developing in the womb is a mere “blob of
tissue” or “uterine contents” as abortionist claim?
No, babies are living humans from conception.
3. Why are pregnant mother advised not to smoke, not to drink alcohol, not to
take any medication without doctor’s advice?
Because smoking, drinking alcohol, and taking medications while pregnant might
harm a child's health and development. Miscarriage, early birth, impairments, and
abnormality in the newborn are all possible outcomes.
ANALYSIS
1. It is more reasonable to believe that which is developing in the mother’s
womb is human being?
Yes, because a human being is already considered a human person at the
time of fertilization. The process of human development begins even before
conception.
2. What are proofs that which is developing in the mother’s womb is a
living human being?
The fact that an unborn kid is also human is written in their DNA, making
them a unique, one-of-a-kind mixture with all of the characteristics of a
person.
3. Has any realization from today’s discussion change your stand on
abortion?
Since then, I've been anti-abortion and will continue to be so. Life is important
to me, and I consider it a gift from God.
4. What are the effects of alcohol, caffeine, nicotine on the developing
embryo/fetus?
It can cause pregnancy loss, low birth weight, delayed brain development,
and deformities in the newborn by disrupting ongoing fetal progress.
APPLICATION
“A Letter from Junior”

Dear Mom,
How are you doing today? Are you all, right? Despite the news that I am growing
inside your womb, I hope you are doing well. I have a feeling you're going to abort me,
so I'm assuming you're not truly comfortable with it. I understand you're still not ready,
but I'm unhappy and disappointed that the person carrying me isn't accountable for her
actions. I'm not sure if you'll be able to read this letter someday, but if you are, I want
you to know that I don't want you to have regrets because they are the most painful
thing in life; I want you to have peace at night and not be consumed by the guilt of
losing someone, especially if it's your own flesh and blood, so please let me live; I also
want to see the world and appreciate all of its good things. Please, Mom, even if you
aren't ready or sure about me, I vow to be a nice and better person that you can be
proud of one day. I'm not sure where my road will lead me, but please give me the
chance to live my life. I'm 4 months old now, still not fully developed and only 6 inches
long, frail and defenseless as I am, but I'm already aware of what's going on outside of
me. If you feel me kicking for the first time in your womb, it's because I want you to
know that I'm alive and that you should value my life. I'm not placing any pressure on
you, Mom, but just look after yourself and allow me to experience how great life can be.
I also want to see you and be with you until you grow old. I'm not sure what made you
decide to abort me, but whatever it was, I still regard you as a strong woman, and it
gives me great pleasure to grow within your womb. My superwoman, I adore you!
