Yogyakarta

Yogyakarta city is one of the big cities in Java Island which is the capital and the
central government of Special Region of Yogyakarta province. Special Region of Yogyakarta
is leaded by The Sultan as the governor and Petahana Pakualam as the vice governor.
Yogyakarta city is leaded by a mayor. The name of Yogyakarta is taken from a word from
Sanskrit language. It is “Ayogya” or “Ayodha” which means peace or without a war. “A”
means “no”, “yogya” refers to “yodha” or “yudha” which means “a war”, and “karta” means
“good”. Ayodha is one of the historical places for India, which is the setting place where
Ramayana, an ancient Sanskirt epic, happened. One of the sub-districts in Yogyakarta,
Kotagede, was the center of the Islamic Mataram Kingdom during 1575 - 1640. The palaces
which are still functionate are The Kraton Ngayogyakarta and Puro Pakualaman, which are
the fractions of Mataram.

Yogyakarta is located in the valley of three rivers. They are Winongo River, Code
River, and Gajahwong River. This city is located about 600 kilometers from Jakarta, 116
kilometers from Semarang, and 65 kilometers from Surakarta. The area of the city of
Yogyakarta is 32.5 square kilometer. The height of the city is 112 above sea level.

The location of the city is so strategic because it is located on the main routes. They
are the Southern Cross Route which connects Yogyakarta, Bandung, Surakarta, Surabaya,
and cities in southern Java, as well as the Yogyakarta-Semarang route, which connects
Yogyakarta, Magelang, Semarang, and cities in the middle of Java Island. Therefore,
transportation in Yogyakarta is quite sufficient to facilitate mobility between these cities.
This city is easily reached by land and air transportation. But there is no water transportation
in this city since its location is quite far from the sea (27 – 30 kilometers).

Recently, the government of Yogyakarta is arranging some rules for tourism activities
due to global COVID-19 pandemic. The rules are arranged based on the strict health
protocols. The rules are derived from the rules that have been applied nationally. They will be
more detail than the national rules.
