5th Grade Band

Unit: Music Theory FUNdamentals


Duration: 4 weeks, 1 lesson per week

Lesson 1: Note/Rest Lengths

Materials: method book, pencil, note/rest flash cards, 4 measure blank staff paper, instruments

1) Welcome and Daily Warmup – 5 minutes


- Instruments and method books

2) Review note/rest lengths – 5 minutes


- White board rhythm clap; 4 student volunteers
- Clap rhythm as class; play rhythm on any note

3) Play through method book exercise songs – 20 minutes

4) Get up and move! – 6 minutes


- Using note/rest flash cards
- Instruments down and students stand up
- Students squat down the number of beats on rests
- Students jump up the number of beats on notes
- Optional: can play music in the background for FUN!

5) Composition – 6 minutes
- Hand out pencils and blank staff paper
- Students compose 4 measures of music in 4/4 time
- Use only notes learned in method book; use more than one!
- Must use both notes and rests; can’t be all whole note/rests!
- Put name at top and hand back in when done for Exit Ticket

Lesson 2: DYNAMics!

Materials: method book, pencil, dynamics flash cards, 4 measure blank staff paper, instruments

1) Welcome and Daily Warmup – 5 minutes


- Instruments and method books

2) Review note/rest lengths – 5 minutes


- White board rhythm clap; 4 student volunteers
- Clap rhythm as class; play rhythm on any note

3) Play through method book exercise songs – 20 minutes

4) Get up and move! – 6 minutes


- Instruments down, students stand up
- Use dynamics flash cards
- Move around the room and imitate the dynamic indicated on the card

5) Composition – 6 minutes
- Hand out pencils and blank staff paper
- Students compose 4 measures of music in 4/4 time
- Use only notes learned in method book; use more than one!
- Must use both notes and rests; can’t be all whole note/rests!
- Must use at least 2 dynamic markings
- Put name at top and hand back in when done for Exit Ticket
5th Grade Band

Unit: Music Theory FUNdamentals


Duration: 4 weeks, 1 lesson per week

Lesson 3: Tempos

Materials: method book, pencil, Tempo flash cards, 4 measure blank staff paper, instruments

1) Welcome and Daily Warmup – 5 minutes


- Instruments and method books

2) Review note/rest lengths – 5 minutes


- White board rhythm clap; 4 student volunteers
- Clap rhythm as class; play rhythm on any note

3) Play through method book exercise songs – 16 minutes

4) Get up and move! – 10 minutes


- Instruments down, students stand up – move to gym
- Use Tempo flash cards
- Students start on one end of the gym and have to get to the other only
moving as fast as the tempo indicated on the flash card
- If they don’t stop for // or go at wrong speed they have to start at the
beginning again

5) Composition – 6 minutes
- Hand out pencils and blank staff paper
- Students compose 4 measures of music in 4/4 time
- Use only notes learned in method book; use more than one!
- Must use both notes and rests; can’t be all whole note/rests!
- Must change tempo from first 2 weeks compositions
- Put name at top and hand back in when done for Exit Ticket
5th Grade Band

Unit: Music Theory FUNdamentals


Duration: 4 weeks, 1 lesson per week

Lesson 4: The Final Composition

Materials: method book, pencil, 16 measure blank staff paper, instruments

1) Welcome and Daily Warmup – 5 minutes


- Instruments and method books

2) Play through method book exercise songs – 15 minutes

3) Final Composition – 25 minutes


- Hand out previous weeks compositions
- Students will use their previous work and compose the final 4 measures
- Arrange previous work in any order they want
- Can use time to adjust or change previous weeks compositions
- Students will perform their final compositions in the coming weeks
