45 Minute Lesson

Objectives
● Students will be able to create simple 4/4 measure-long rhythms using a set of provided
rhythmic values.
● Students will work in teams to create their own rhythms and analyze other teams
rhythms.
● Students will be able to analyze rhythms in order to check for accuracy in a 4/4 time
signature.
● Students will be able to take small chunks of rhythm and quickly put them together in
numerous different orders.

Standards
● MIB.1 A - Compose a four-measure rhythmic-melodic variation.
● MIB.5 C - Describe and demonstrate active listening in rehearsal and as an audience
member.
● MIB.12 B - Notate student-created compositions using standard notation.

Materials
● Dry-Erase Boards (Classroom Provided)
● Expo Markers (Classroom Provided)
● Rhythm Value Cards (Classroom Provided)

Procedures
● Students will be counted off (1-4) and then split into groups by corresponding number,
each group will then go to a different corner of the room. (~3 Minutes)
● The assignment will be explained to the students and materials will be distributed. Each
group will have a selection of cards with rhythmic values on them that they will use to
create a measure of music at a time. (~5 Minutes)
● Students will create one measure of music within their group and write it on a
whiteboard, which will be given to the teacher. (~5 Minutes)
● Each group will be given a different group’s whiteboard and will teach themselves the
rhythm written on it. (~2 Minutes)
● Groups will be asked to clap the rhythm given to them to the rest of the class, going one
group at a time. (~5 Minutes)
● All four of the created rhythms will be put on the board, and the students will clap them
together as a class in changing orders as the teacher points to them in seemingly random
patterns, getting faster as time goes on. (~5 Minutes)
● Students will start the process over, this time being asked to create two measures of
music, while also introducing more rhythmic values. (~5 Minutes)
● Groups 1 and 3, and Groups 2 and 4 will be paired together to make a four measure
rhythm out of their two measure ideas. These will then be written on a whiteboard. (~5
Minutes)
● The exercises will be put on the board, and the groups will take turns deciphering the
other group’s exercise before putting them all together. (~8 Minutes)
● The class will clean up. Rhythm cards put back in bags and whiteboards/markers given
back to the teacher. (~2 Minutes)
