1. The current~voltage characteristics for a triode for alternating current (TRIAC) or bidirectional
triode thyristor or bilateral triode thyristor in the 1st & 3rd quadrants are essentially identical to those
of _______ type of devices in its _______ quadrant? Justify your answer.
Note the options: (a) Transistor, or (b) SCR, or (c) UJT, or (d) None of these. [5]
2. Describe the three modes of operation of a basic flash memory array, and explain its major
advantages over SRAM and DRAM. [5]
3. A device composed of 3 SCRs (i.e., SCR-1, -2, & -3 are connected together in series). If the voltage
drop across each individual thyristor is given as V1=350 volt, V2=300 volt, & V3=250 volt and their
corresponding current drawn across these individual SCR devices are I1=6 ampere, I2=9 ampere, &
I3=12 ampere, respectively. Assume, the value of resistance for each SCR is same here, so what
would be that value of individual equalising resistance (R=?) to be used across each thyristor to
satisfy the above given values of currents and voltages? [4]
4. (A) To fabricate a “ 16K × 8 ” memory system, how many ROM chips of memory capacity of “ 2K
× 8 ” are required? and (B) in a RAM chip of memory capacity of “ 16K × 8 ”, find the number of
words (address/word lines) and bits (bit data lines) in this memory? [3]
5. The intrinsic stand-off ratio of an unijunction transistor (UJT) based relaxation oscillator is given as,
η = 0.65. Determine the value of the timing resistor (R3=?) which is required to exhibit an oscillation
of frequency (f) = 100Hz, if a capacitor of capacitance value of (C1) = 100nF is used to generate the
timing pulses. Also, briefly discuss: what would happen to the UJT oscillator circuit, if the
calculated value of R3 is too large (in MegaOhms) or too small (a few hundred Ohms)? [3]
