RESPIRATORY SYSTEM

 consist of organs that involves in breathing

which each have their own unique functions that
enables us to breath
 humans breath approxiamtely 23, 000 times a
day

Respiration

– excahnge of oxygen from the environment for carbon dioxide from

the body’s cell.

Inhalation Exhalation

– process of breathing air – process of breathing air

into lungs out

Nasal cavity

- providing humans sense of smell; warming and

moistening the air; filtering out foreign particles;
assists in development of sound
- Conchae => helps huminified air

Epiglottis

- flap-like structure
- prevents food from going into trachea

Pharynx (Throat)

- a tube that carries air from nasal cavity to the

larnynx

Larynx (Voicebox)

- carries air into trachea

Trachea (Windpipe)

- splits into two breathing tubes which carries air into lungs

Bronchi

- it extends to bronchiole

Bronchiole
- it branches out many times throughout the lungs

Alveoli

- tiny thin walled air sacs

- filled with oxygen traveling down from
breathing tubes
- each sac are covered with capillaries
(tiny blood vessels)
- it is where gas exchange takes place

Diaphragm

- a large shape of muscle which stretches

across the chest under the rib cage
- does most of the work during inhalation
causing the chest to expand as the lungs
filled with air

Mucus

- catches foreign particles when humans breath

through mouth
- tiny hair-like structures line the airways to help
move mucus

Mouth breathing

- air inhaled through mouth doesn’t have the

chance to be huminified in nasal cavity
- exposing breathing tubes to harsh, dry and
uncleansed air
- increases risk of infection, anxiety, stress,
sleeping problems and reduced immunity
- can impact the body on a cellular level trhough oxygen and carbon dioxide
deficiencies

Functions of Respiratory System

- brings oxygen to the body
- it allows us to exhale carbon dioxide (waste gas produce as part of the
body’s energy making process) from the body
- provides protection against foreign particles

Respiratory Issues

Minor disorders

- common cold
- influenza
- acute bronchitis
- pneumonia

Major disorders

- chronic bronchitis
- emphysema
- lung cancer

Maintaining/Improve Respiratory Health

- maintain healthy weight

- drink more water
- consume healthy diet
- limit exposure to allergens
- maintain good hygiene
- moderate consumption of
alcohol
- be active
- have indoor plants
