7 PREDICTIONS FOR THE FUTURE WORKPLACE

The pandemic has changed the way we live our

lives and has subsequently altered the
fundamental expectations regarding work.
While its onset encouraged exploration and
implementation of various methods to get work
done outside of the office, it has been observed
that the physical workspace is equally
indispensable.
With employers working towards a common
goal- bringing their people back to office - the
role of the physical workplace is seen in a new
light. Design is and will continue to be the all-
benefactor, guiding architects and other

7 PREDICTIONS FOR THE FUTURE WORKPLACE

Remote work is here to stay. Offices are here

to stay too, but with a makeover.
The importance of maintaining and building working relationships with
colleagues at the workplace was clearly realized while working
remotely.

While remote working has its own perks, some telling downfalls like back-
to-back video conferences, constant notifications, and isolation from
peers were also observed. Workers also say company culture suffers
with no in-person interaction, risk of miscommunication is higher, and it’s
harder to start new projects with multiple collaborators. The following
indications have made employers and employees re-evaluate what the
future of work holds for them:
REMOTE WORKING WOES

Decline in collaboration and social connectivity

It was found that while many people have maintained or improved
productivity while working remotely during the pandemic, fewer have
done so on collaborative tasks, according to a survey done by BCG1.
Increased dependency on technology and lack of connectivity
While organisations predominantly prioritise using technology to
facilitate remote work, employees globally believe they could do their
jobs better if they had better tech skills and want more accessible
products and trainings on how to use the technologies most effectively.
Digital static and lack of in-person interaction
Virtual communication can create “digital static”: The gap between what
you try to communicate online and what the person receiving the
message understands. Increased digital static causes increased fatigue,
anxiety and burnout resulting in reduced motivation and engagement
among employees
With high productivity comes an exhausted workforce
According to a survey conducted by Microsoft.inc2 the digital intensity of
workers’ days has increased substantially, with the average number of
meetings and chats steadily rising since last year. Additionally, remote
workers are experiencing higher levels of burnout than before the
pandemic, leading to other health issues.

UNDERSTANDING THE CURRENT WORKFORCE

There has been a significant shift in employee expectations for the future
of work, with a keen interest for flexible ways of working and in-person
collaboration in the future. This has led to organizations adopting the
blended workplace model to help balance both.

While employees choose the office to be more productive, they
choose home for convenience and safety. Work-life harmony takes
precedence.
THE BLENDED WORK MODEL

A blended workplace, or blended office, is a flexible workplace model

that is designed to support a distributed workforce of both in-office and
remote workers.

As per research4 the potential for remote work can be

determined by tasks and activities, not occupations.

Three dimensions of a blended workplace:

It is important to note that a “one size fits all” solution does not exist while
implementing a blended work model. A blended workplace assumes a
mix of workstyles across the following three dimensions for employees
within organizations.

7 PREDICTIONS FOR THE FUTURE WORKPLACE

Technology will continue to be the go-to

resource for fostering connections.
Technology plays a significant role in making the work environment
safer and facilitate equity among remote and in-office employees.
TECHNOLOGY IN THE WORKPLACE

In a global survey done by Cisco2 , the following were the highest rated
responses when employees were asked which technologies would
benefit them in providing a better work environment:
▪ Collaboration devices that recognize the user by automatically
pairing with personal devices (laptop, tablet, phone, etc.)
▪ Wireless screen sharing
▪ Digital signage that displays alerts (cleanliness, availability, company
news, technology capabilities, etc.)
▪ Digital office navigation assistance
▪ Voice-controlled meeting assistant for booking meeting and
touchless controls for meeting rooms.
Touchless control technology makes it possible for users to control a
digital system without any form of physical contact through gesture
recognition, voice recognition, facial recognition and personal devices,
sensors and IoT.

These solutions combined help decrease the number of touchpoints and

facilitates easy management of the workplace. Technology for the future
workplace include:
Keyless door access
Keyless door access allows employees to enter the
office without touching a keypad or handle and access
can be enabled by motion sensors, Bluetooth or even
facial recognition.
Indoor location services & wayfinding
Wayfinding apps allow employees to find space based
on the type of work they need to do, or to choose a

space near people they need to work with. They can

also help direct one-way traffic patterns to avoid
unnecessary interactions.
Wireless charging
A convenient and cable-free way to charge your
devices. Wireless charging gives users touch-free
charging experiences to charge up their personal
devices.
Touchless desk check-in
Touchless desk check-in solutions give employees the
ability to reserve or check-in to desks through their
personal devices. With visual indicators deployed
across every desk, employees can see immediately
across the office which desks are available for them (do
not use blocked for cleaning / in-use reserved desk /
clean and available for use).
Sensors for meeting room control
In meeting rooms, touch-free motion sensors allow
employees to control lighting, voice recognition can
also be deployed to start the meeting to trigger smart
experiences when connected to other cloud-based
technologies, such as smart lighting and room
temperature.
Touchless meetings check-in
Personal smart phones can be used to check into a
meeting room by integrating with room booking
software. This action simultaneously launches pre-
booked video conference for a quick start to meetings.
