SUMMARY NARRATIVE:
In the digital transformation era, social media is the rising revolution in the Journalism &
Mass Communication Industry. In the 21st century, social media like Facebook, YouTube,
Twitter, and Instagram are the most popular platforms among people of all generations. While
using these applications, security and privacy are the prime concerns that must be considered.
There are so many privacy and security issues or challenges for Social Media’s users.
Facebook is not as private as it claims. In fact, nothing is private on the internet. Facebook has
some issues with users’ data privacy and security. The first issue is that not all photos are
private even if you set your profile to be private. Some of your pictures will still appear because
the individual picture is set to public. Another issue is that your comments are searchable, but
many users don’t think that their comments on status and posts can be searched but that is
wrong because comments are acutely searchable and can appear in Google searches. The
profile will appear if you search your name on Google and if you have an account on Facebook.
Hidden posts can still appear even if you hide them from your own timeline. In recent years, the
explosive growth of information technology and internet use to obtain information, goods, and
services have fueled and there is a debate and controversy about the potential threats to
privacy. Personal identifiable information can be used in a number of ways that were never
imagined or sanctioned by the person who used the social media. 93 % of commercial social
media collect at least one of the personal identifications. Less than 10% of social media
encompass all five principles: Notice, Choice, Access, Security, and Enforcement. One-third of
sites post no privacy policy. Only a third of surveyed sites guaranteed not to send visitors’
information to third parties. There is no such thing as “delete” anymore –everything lives online
forever. The primary business model for most successful online corporations is the mass
collection and memorization of your personal data. All the major social networks’ default setting
is public. There are many ethical dilemmas arising for social media’s users like hacking into
computers, using pictures without consent, stealing ideas, etc. We now must think about the
consequences of our actions in a whole new way. This research paper focuses on ethical
challenges or dilemmas for data privacy and security arising with social media.

WHAT LESSON HAVE YOU LEARNED?

Everything you post publicly and, in some cases, privately is being stored and analyzed.
It is not just social media, there are now digital records of everything you buy, everything
watches, where you go, and what happens at your house. Even your physical characteristics
are tracked and stored. All of this data is being used to create profiles of us. I have learned that
even my safest, escape or comfort area which is the online world is not safe, I guess trust is
always part of the risk, I have learned that I should not trust social media like it’s my other half. I
learned that I should limit my presence online, I think I might do outdoor activities again.

WHAT SUGGESTIONS CAN YOU OFFER?

I think it will be best to limit what you are sharing and posting online because this could
put you in danger. When it comes to security and accounts, we should use a strong and long
password so that we can put ourselves far away from hacking. Also, when it comes to
downloading apps and agreeing to some cookies or terms and agreements, it’s advisable to
read it all before agreeing because all your information can be scoop in just one click. Always
alert yourself, try to sync your accounts with another account, for instance, Gmail so that you
can recover it easily. Be cautious, never open any attachment if it’s from an unknown person,
confirm the attachment first by downloading an anti-virus app, it’s better to be safe than sorry.
Make sure that your data has back up, you can use a flash drive for all your essential data.
Lastly, most students and even teachers are always browsing on the internet to search for some
lesson and to study it, it is advisable to have a search provider, I’ve seen from an article that I’ve
read that incognito can’t help when it comes to blocking some undesirable content and viruses,
you can use DuckDuckGo as my search provider, it’s easy to use and I feel safe.
