You will apply learned concepts of melody and other elements

to composition and performance. Specifically, this module will help you
to:
 Sings or plays instruments in solo or with group, melodies or songs in
G Major and F Major
 Analyzes the melodic patterns of songs in G Major and F Major
 Demonstrates the ability to sing, read, and write simple musical notations
in the key of G Major and F Major

Let us start your journey in learning more about major scales

Let’s Think and Act Now!

LOOKING BACK TO YOUR LESSON

What is C Major Scale?

The pattern of all Major scales is based on the C scale. C Major is one of
the most commonly used key signatures. It is the simplest key because it has
no sharp ( ) or flat ( ) note. Its first note is do which is the home tone.

5
BRIEF INTRODUCTION

The sharps ( ) and flats ( ) written at the beginning of the staff is

called key signature. It tells about the key names and the location of do
pitch of the song. This is a big help for singers or performers to reach the right
pitch that best suit their singing voice.

A key signature may either be sharp ( ) or flat ( ) found at the

beginning of a musical piece.

A sharp (#) is a musical symbol that raises the pitch of a

note by a half step

A flat ( ) is a musical symbol that lowers the pitch of a

note by a half step

ACTIVITIES

Activity 1. Let’s Learn Together!

G Major Scale
The G Major scale has one sharp (#). It is located on the fifth line
after the G clef at the beginning of the staff. Notice that the second line
is named G; thus in the key of G Major, the home tone do is located on
the second line.

BRIEF INTRODUCTIONF
Let’s Study This!

There are a lot of artist who use different brush techniques and style
like Vincent Van Gogh, the Dutch post-impressionist painter who painted the
famous “Starry Night” and our very own National Artist, Fernando Amorsolo
who became famous for his painting of rural Philippine landscapes.

Studying their works will inspire you to create something that similarly
attractive as theirs. Familiarize yourself with the brush style and techniques
of these master and you will see yourself creating your own master piece
especially in this modern era where technology make it easy to paint.

There are software and application which you can use to create your
digital painting.

Here are the steps on how to paint digitally like the masters;

Step1: Conceptualize your subject, then start your painting software in your
computer.

Step 2: Create layers. Sketch each object using pencil tool in every layer.

Game of the
Generals

20
BRIEF INTRODUCTION
Chess is a game played by two people on a square board of 64 squares,
each alternately light and dark color referred to as” white or black”. The board
is placed so that each player has a light square at their right-hand corner.
Each player begins with 16 chess pieces of one color, these pieces are 8
pawns, 2 knights, 2 bishops, 1 queen and 1 king. Every chess piece has its
own move. White is always the first to move and take turns alternately moving
1 piece at a time until checkmate happens or stalemate. Checkmate ends
the game and the side whose king is checkmated loses the game. Stalemate
also ends the game but both players are not winners neither losers the game
ends as a draw.

Figure no. 1: National Age Group Grand Finals 2019

Chess develops the critical thinking of players. These skills are problem
solving, abstract reasoning, calmness, patience, sportsmanship, creative
thinking, pattern recognition and strategic thinking.

THE CHESS PIECES AND THEIR POINT VALUE

The values can be used to give a rough estimate of the current state of the
game (who is winning and losing). The values are also useful when evaluating

21
trade.

Figure no. 2: Chess Pieces from left to right: Queen, Rook, Pawn, Bishop, Knight, and King

THE INITIAL POSITION SETUP

The chessboard is made up of eight rows and eight columns for a total of 64
squares of alternating colors. Each square of the chessboard is identified with
a unique pair of a letter and a number. The vertical files are labeled a through
h, from White´s left (i.e. the queenside) to White´s right. Similarly, the
horizontal ranks are numbered from 1 to 8, starting from the one nearest
White´s side of the board. Each square of the board, then, is uniquely
identified by its file letter and rank number. In the initial position setup, the
light queen is positioned on a light square and the dark queen is situated on
a dark square. The diagram below shows how the pieces should be initially
situated.

Figure no. 3: Initial position set-up (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chess#Setup)

22
CHESS PIECES ON HOW THEY MOVE AND CAPTURED
The Pawn moves forward only, one square at a time. An exception is the first
time a pawn is moved, it may move forward two squares. En passant is a move
in chess. It is a special pawn capture that can only occur immediately after a
pawn makes a move of two squares from its starting square, Pawn promotion
is also a move wherein a pawn reaches the opposite side of the board, it can
be promoted to a piece of the player’s choosing any of the pieces he wanted.
The pawn is the only piece that cannot move backward. The pawn is also the
only piece that does not capture in the same way that it moves. The pawn
captures an opposing piece by moving diagonally one square

Figure no. 4: The Pawn and its movements

The Knights move is the only piece on the board that may jump over other
pieces. The knight moves two squares horizontally or vertically and then one
more square at a right-angle. The knight’s move is shaped as an “L”. The
knight always lands on a square opposite in color from its initial square. The
knight can jump over pieces of either color while going to its destination
square, but it does not capture any pieces it jumps over. The knight captures
by landing on the square of the opposing piece. The knight cannot land on a
square occupied by a piece of the same color.

Figure no. 5: The Knight and its movements

23
The Bishop moves in a straight line diagonally on the board. The bishop
captures on the same path it moves, by landing on the square of the opposing
piece. Because of the way the bishop moves, the piece always remains on the
same color squares it started on. Each player begins with two bishops, one
on the black-colored and one on the white-colored squares. They are
frequently referred to as the “dark-squared” bishop and “light-
squared” bishop. The bishops can also be named according to the side they
begin on - king's bishop and queen's bishop.

Figure no. 6: The Bishop and its movements

The Rook moves in a straight line either horizontally or vertically through any
number of unoccupied squares, until it reaches the end of board or it is
blocked by another piece. It cannot jump over other pieces. The rook captures
on the same path it moves, by occupying the square on which an enemy piece
stands. The rook can land on any square on the board; therefore, it is one of
the more powerful pieces on the board.

Figure no. 7: The Rook and its movements

24
The Queen is considered the most powerful piece on the board. It can move
any number of squares in a straight line - either vertically, horizontally or
diagonally. The queen moves like the rook and bishop combined. Unless
capturing, the queen must move to an unoccupied square; and it cannot jump
over pieces. The queen captures on the same path it moves, by landing on the
square of the opposing piece.

Figure no. 8: The Queen and its movements

The King is the most important piece in chess. If the king is trapped so that
its capture is unavoidable, the game is over and that player loses. The king
has little mobility, so it is also considered one of the weakest pieces in the
game. The king can move to any adjacent square. That is, it can move one
square in any direction: horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. It cannot move
onto a square occupied by a piece of the same color. The king captures
another piece in the same way it moves, by landing on the square of the
opposing piece.

27
REMEMBER
1.The game of chess is played between two opponents who move their pieces
alternately on a square board called a "chessboard".

2.The chessboard is composed of an 8x8 grid of 64 equal squares alternately light

(the "white" squares) and dark (the "black" squares).

3.At the beginning of the game one player has 16 light-colored pieces (the "white"
pieces); the other has 16 dark-colored pieces (the "black" pieces):

4.The point values can be used in making wise capture.

The moves of the pieces

1. It is not permitted to move a piece to a square occupied by a piece of the same

color. If a piece moves to a square occupied by an opponent´s piece the latter is
captured and removed from the chessboard as part of the same move.

2.a) The queen may move to any square along the file, the rank or a diagonal on
which it stands.

b) The rook may move to any square along the file or the rank on which it stands.

c) The bishop may move to any square along a diagonal on which it stands.

3. The knight’s move is shaped as an “L”. The knight always lands on a square
opposite in color from its initial square

4.a) The pawn may move forward to the unoccupied square immediately in front of
it on the same file, or it may advance two squares along the same file. It can also
move diagonally when capturing a piece.

b) En passant is a special pawn capture that can only occur after a pawn moves of
two squares from its starting move.

c) pawn promotion is a special move wherein a pawn reaches the opposite side of the
board; it can be promoted to a piece of the player’s choosing any of the pieces he
wanted.

5.There are two different ways of moving the king, by:

a) moving to any adjoining square not attacked by one or more of the opponent’s
pieces.

b) "castling". This is a move of the king and either rook of the same colour on the
same rank, counting as a single move of the king and executed as follows: the king
is transferred from its original square two squares towards the rook, then that rook
is transferred to the square the king has just crossed.
