Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Management Systems:
Towards Development of Safety and Health Culture Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Management Systems help identify, asses and evaluate appropriate actions to eliminate the health and safety risks that have been occurring in companies and industrial firms including in agriculture, forestry and fishery, mining and quarry, manufacturing, construction, trade and transportation and other public or non-public services. Implementing OSH management systems in an industry protects the employees and employers from harm, accidents and illness in the workplace. Particular to construction industry, provisions and maintenance for a safe and healthy workplace results to a more effective way to minimize cost holdings in a construction business. Safety and health should be well managed for humanitarian consideration, financial costs, and legal sanction. OSH management safety involves company level, project management level, site management level, and individual level. Hinze (1997) believes that a failure to each level leads to an accidents and incidents that can harm the workers and the main parties that are involved in construction process (owners, designers, supervising companies, and contractors). The OSH must be implemented to all levels of organizations. The research highlighted the condition of the OSH management system in construction industries. In fact, they categorized most construction industries for poor OSH culture and performance. This situation must be fix by encouraging the industries and companies to prioritize this matter. Most business industries proved that promoting a great value for safety and health management benefited them in terms of operational efficiencies, reduction in lost workdays, fewer accidents and medical claims, recognitions by insurers and regulators and improved workers retention and satisfaction. By implementing the best way to reduce the risk of accidents and hazardous conditions in our country will take us into achieving a zero percentage of these risks. The OSH management system in Malaysia is one specific example for providing and securing safety, health and welfare for the people in their work. Malaysia directly gave importance on their OSH management system to help lessen occupational accidents and incidents. Through this research, I finally understand the main purpose of Safety Management as a field of study in our Engineering program. I learned that having a safe and healthy environment leads to a better results not only for the whole industry but also for each individual that is associated within it. Safety and health always starts individually on our own. And having a commitment to this matter by practicing of safety and health policies can also affect the environment, property and other people. My commitment for applying safety and health management system as a student is by always taking care of my own health and safety. I also believe that familiarizing myself to the safety and health requirements and activities and practicing them appropriately can improve my sense of responsibility in this matter. I will communicate and cooperate to my other teammates or co-workers to determine other social and current issues regarding to safety and health management. This will also help me know my responsibilities and heighten my knowledge for identifying hazardous conditions and strategical solutions in a certain situation. If every single person would give appropriate and best performance to OSH management system, it is not impossible to attain a one hundred percent safe and healthy environment for all of us.
