WHAT IS GIS?
• A technology
– hardware & software tools
• An information handling strategy
• The objective: to improve overall decision making
• Formal definition:
A system for capturing, storing, checking, integrating,
manipulating, analysing and displaying data which are
spatially referenced to the Earth. This is normally
considered to involve a spatially referenced computer
database and appropriate applications software”

WHY IS GIS UNIQUE?
• GIS handles SPATIAL information
– Information referenced by its location in space
• GIS makes connections between activities based on spatial
proximity

Make Better Decisions
GIS can be used to help reach a decision about the location of a new
housing development that has minimal environmental impact, is located
in a low-risk area, and is close to a population center. The information
can be presented succinctly and clearly in the form of a map and
accompanying report, allowing decision makers to focus on the real
issues rather than trying to understand the data. Because GIS products
can be produced quickly, multiple scenarios can be evaluated efficiently
and effectively.
