ISLAM IN SPAIN (711-1492)

For Europe and Western civilization the contributions
of Islamic Spain were of inestimable value. When the
Muslims entered southern Spain, which became Al
Andalus, barbarians from the north had overrun much
of Europe and the classical civilization of Greece and
Rome had gone into eclipse. Islamic Spain then be-
came a bridge by which the scientific, technological,
and philosophical legacy of the ‘Abbasid period, along
with the achievements of Al Andalus itself passed into
Europe.

ISLAM AND EUROPE

Since the opening of Granada Mosque in 2003, the Muslim community in Spain, and
all over Europe, feels the growing necessity to educate our youths in the Din by main-
taining a balance between the universal basics of Islam and our European identity.
Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala has honoured us with the greatest gift: Iman in Him and
His Rasul, sallallahu alaihi wa sallam. It is therefore our joyful obligation to learn and
spread the correct teachings of the Din.
The millions of Muslims in Europe urgently need teachers who not only know the cor-
rect teachings of Islam, but who are also familiar with their European context. Muslims
need to know the society they live in to be truly able to contribute to its stability and

INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS
The Comunidad Islámica en Es-
paña was registered in 1981.
Many of its members are Spanish
Muslims who converted to Islam
in the last 40 years. Now the third
generation of Spanish Muslims is
growing up. In 2003 the CIE was
able to complete the establishment
of Granada Mosque. This landmark
project received help from Muslims
from all over the world, with the
last important patronage being the
on-going support of H.H. Dr. Sheikh
Sultan Mohammed Al Qassimi, the
Emir of Sharjah (UAE). Due to its
unique location right opposite the
world-famous Alhambra palace Gra-
nada Mosque receives Muslim visi-
tors from Morocco to Indonesia.

After having built Granada Mosque now

three generations of Spanish Muslims strive
to establish their own Institute for the Study
of Qur’an and School for Future Imams.

In a second construction phase we want to

add Productive Workshops and a Permacul-
ture Farm to help finance our Qur’an & Imam
School.

Experienced veterans join forces with the

vigour of youth: what before was difficult
now becomes possible. A long journey be-
gins with the first step. Please honour our
efforts with your kind help!

Malik del Pozo Cadenas
Nationality: Spanish
Birth Date: 5/1/1983
He has dedicated most of his life to the study of Qur’an
and Islamic sciences. After graduating from the Insti-
tut Européen des Sciences Humaines (IESH, France) at
Château-Chinon in Arabic language he went on to mem-
orize the Qur’an in Madrassa Rahaliya in Morocco, com-
bining his studies with Shari’ah sciences at Qarawiyyin
of Fez. He has held the post of Imam in various
mosques including including Cape Town, South Africa,
and Greifswald, Germany, among others. To this day he
continues to deepen his knowledge of Tafsir, Fiqh and
Shari’ah in Morocco.
Abdellah Castiñeira Gamo
Nationality: Spanish
Birth Date: 11/7/1985
Abdellah Castiñeira studied in Morocco and then spent a
year in Dubai memorising Qur’an under Shaykh Shaqroun
and Fiqh with the renowned Mauritanian scholar Umar
Salek. He completed the memorisation of the Qur’an
at the Wazzani Madrassa in Mallorca, Spain. He then
moved to Cape Town, South Africa, where he furthered
his studies in the sciences of the Qur’an, Hadith and
Fiqh. He graduated from the Dallas College with a BA
in History and Geopolitics. He was Imam in a central
mosque in Cape Town where he also taught members
of the Muslim community. He spent a year in Switzer-
land helping to establish an Islamic Centre. Since 2018
he is the Imam Khatib of the Granada Mosque. Currently
he is a fifth-year student of Medicine at the University
of Granada.
Abd Al Qadir Schaller
Nationality: US-American
Birth Date: 7/31/1980
Studied Qur’an and Islamic sciences from a young
age under various teachers. After completing his
state education he continued his Qur’anic studies
under Shaykh Muhammad Wazzani and helped him
to establish the Madrassa Muhammad Wazzani in
Mallorca, Spain. He was the Managing Director of the
madrassa for 10 years. He has been working as an
English language teacher and translator since 2013
as well as collaborating with the Muslim community
in different capacities. He is currently the Director
of the Cultural Foundation of the Great Mosque of
Granada.
