Activity #5 – Exit Card

At the end of each guide you will be asked to reflect on your understanding of the expectations and content of the

guide. Really knowing something means being able to explain how you know, you know something. Yes, read that last

sentence again. It means, you know how you know something. So, with that in mind here is your reflective exit card for

this guide.

politics was also very heavy, and changed life for women

all around Canada forever, in a positive way. Overall, the

rst few decades was incorporated with a lot of
nationalism, racism, segregation, and sexism.

I can imagine that life at the time must have been very tough if you were not
from a country that was with the Allies. You had to go through being
underpaid, overworked, discriminated, robbed, etc. Even as someone who
was from a country that was part of the Allies, you still had to go through to
pain and su ering of losing a loved one, or even yourself, because you
were forced into being drafted. Hundreds of thousands of Canadians lost
their children, brother, or best friend because of the war. Due to the war, the
economy was down the drain, with lots of high in ation all around the
world. Germany su ered the most after the war due to the Treaty of
Versailles.

To this day, in many countries discrimination and sexism is still very alive, and so are labor camps. In
China, millions of muslims are currently being held in internment camps. In many countries, women
are not allowed to learn to vote, or even go to school. Saudi Arabia is a big example of oppression
against women. Women are forbidden to vote, and are constantly harassed and even tortured by
o cers. In many countries in North Africa, women barely go to school. In Niger, only 17% of young
women are literate. In South Sudan, 75% of girls do not attend school at all. In India, racism is still
very alive. Studies show that India is actually the most discriminative country, especially towards
darker skinned people. 43% of Indians stated that they would not be comfortable with a neighbour
of foreign descent. 65% stated that they have witnessed racism and discrimination unfold.

How were any Germans in France and Great Britain treated after the war?

How were any French or British people treated in Germany?

What else is there that we don’t know about the internment camps that were in Canada?
