ACTIVITY 1

RESEARCH IS LIFE

Research is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody
else has thought.” – Albert Szent-Gyorgyi

Research is what propels humanity forward. It’s fueled by curiosity: we get

curious, ask questions, and immerse ourselves in discovering everything there is to
know. Learning is thriving. Without curiosity and research, progress would slow to a
halt, and our lives as we know them would be completely different.

What would the modern world look like without the bedrock of research?
First and foremost – without research, there’s no way you’d possibly be
reading this right now, as the Internet was pioneered and developed by the European
Organization.
Without research, we’d likely also be utterly defenseless to the brutal forces of
nature. For example, without meteorology, we’d be unable to predict the path of
violent storms, hurricanes and tornadoes, while a lack of volcanology research would
leave a huge proportion of the world susceptible to the destruction of volcanic
eruptions.

And it doesn’t end there. Medical technology and discovery would be non-
existent – no MRI, no anesthetic, no birth control, no X-Ray machine, no insulin, no
IVF, no penicillin, no germ theory, no DNA, and no smallpox vaccination – which, by
the way would have wiped out one out of every nine babies had Jenner not
researched and found a cure.
So not only is research an invaluable tool for building on crucial knowledge,
it’s also the most reliable way we can begin to understand the complexities of various
issues; to maintain our integrity as we disprove lies and uphold important truths; to
serve as the seed for analyzing convoluted sets of data; as well as to serve as
‘nourishment’, or exercise for the mind.
ACTIVITY 2
DESCRIBE WHAT WILL HAPPEN WHEN
YOU LEAVE FOOD ON THE TABLE FOR A
FEW DAYS
The "2-hour rule" states that perishables left at room temperature for more than
two hours should be discarded. If the food is being kept in an area that is 90 degrees
Fahrenheit (32.2 degrees Celsius) or above, leftovers should be refrigerated to 40
degrees Fahrenheit (4.4 degrees Celsius) or below within one hour. This may seem like a
relatively short amount of time for food to become unsafe.

Bacteria grow most rapidly between 40 degrees Fahrenheit (4.4 degrees Celsius)
and 140 degrees Fahrenheit (60 degrees Celsius) the temperature the USDA refers to as
the "danger zone" and can take as little as 20 minutes for the number of bacteria to
double.

Foods that are most associated staphylococcal food poisoning, include meat,
poultry, egg products, and foods that are eaten cold such as salads (specifically egg,
tuna, chicken, potato, and macaroni), cream-filled pastries, sandwich fillings, and milk
and dairy products. Anytime you leave food out too long, you risk food poisoning which
can lead to fever, diarrhea, vomiting, dehydration, and in rare cases paralysis,
meningitis, and death.

USES OF RESEARCH IN LIFE
AS A STUDENT
Regardless of the career path a person is following or their position in society, there is
always room for learning. The same is applicable for individuals going through their
academic years. Research can be mentally draining at times and students want to avoid
it. Yet it is an imperative part of learning and developing as a scholar. Without research
any intellectual growth is quite impossible. Why exactly is it so essential?
A Knowledge Building Tool. The most prominent reason to engage in research is to
enhance your knowledge. Even if you are an expert of your field, there is always more
to uncover.
Enables Efficient Learning. Therefore, it prepares the mind for a better understanding of
concepts and theories. A person’s learning capacity is improved and they can perform
better in comparison who is reluctant to research.
Aids Employment Prospects. Research has an undeniable role in the business
industry. Successful companies have resources invested in research and
development to have all the information they need of the market. Your academic
phase helps you prepare for any research tasks you will have to accomplish in the
future
Helps in Understanding Issues. It sheds light on problems that have not yet come out in
the open. It gives people the opportunity to address issues and answer questions that
the society doesn’t respond to.
Provides Truthful Evidence. The process of research can prove to dispel various myths
that have been built up in our minds. They can either develop because of common
belief or a wrong resource. Logical and fact-based knowledge is easily accessible if
you only reach out to find the truth.
Develops a Love of Reading and Analyzing. Reading and writing are the core elements
of research. So, they automatically become familiar to you if you are involved in
researching facts and figures.
Exercises your Mind. Letting your mind frequently absorb logic and creativity allows it
to become more active. It creates a healthy curiosity that fuels the brain and makes it
seek new answers.
Keeps You Updated on Recent Information
In various fields, especially ones that are related to science, there are always new
discoveries to explore. Research prevents you from remaining behind or have
inaccurate information about a topic. You can use the latest knowledge to build upon
ideas or talk confidently about a subject if required. Which takes us to the next factor
about building credibility.
ACTIVITY 4
REFLECTION
Being able to attend the first online class in Research 7 through
Google Meet gave a sense of excitement and happiness. Excitement in
the sense that I was able to see and meet my classmates though it
wasn’t face to face but seeing them online was such a good feeling.
Another thing is that I was able to see our teacher, Mr. Reynaldo
Caratao Jr. Sir Don was very enthusiastic in explaining to us the
rationale of our subject. Though at first, I had many doubts and
questions about this subject since it is very new to me, I was being
enlightened by the discussions made by Sir Don.

Most of all I felt happiness knowing that this subject can help me
a lot in my everyday life not just as a student but as a person as well.
Research has been beneficial to a lot of people since time immemorial.
Almost all of the comforts we enjoy in life today are products of
research. The cellular phones for example never came out of the blue
but were an output of a thorough and arduous research work.

Thus, I am very thankful to have this subject for I know I will learn
many things in it.
