Top Fertilizers Exports by Country

Fertilizers exported by all countries totaled US$55.6 billion in 2020. That dollar
amount reflects an average 14.6% increase for all shippers of fertilizers over the
five-year period starting in 2016 when overall fertilizer exports were worth $48.5
billion.

Fertilizers are critical agricultural drivers, essential for growing crops that feed
people around the world.

The 6 biggest fertilizer exporters are Russia, mainland China, Canada, United States of America,
Morocco and Belarus. Collectively, those major suppliers accounted for over half (51.4%) of
globally exported fertilizers during 2020.

Among continents, countries in Europe sold the highest dollar worth of exported fertilizers during 2020
with shipments valued at $21.7 billion or 39.1% of the world total. In second place were Asian exporters at
30.5% while 16.2% of international fertilizer shipments originated from North America. Another 11.4%
were sent from Africa (11.4%).

Smaller percentages came from Latin America (2.4%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean, and
Oceania (0.5%) led by Australia.

As for different types of exported fertilizers, about three-quarters (75.1%) were nitrogen-based. Potassic
fertilizers represent 21% compared to phosphatic fertilizers at 2.2%. Excluding those mineral or chemical
fertilizer subcategories, the other fertilizer type was animal or vegetable fertilizers which accounted for the

remaining 1.7%.

By value, the listed 30 countries shipped 88.7% of globally exported fertilizers in 2020.

Among the top exporters, the following exporters of fertilizers posted double-digit gains since 2019:
Ukraine (up 67.8%), Indonesia (up 19.2%), Morocco (up 16.1%), United Kingdom (up 12.7%) and Saudi
Arabia (up 10.2%).

Those countries that posted declines in their international sales of fertilizers were led by: Russia (down
-16.7%), United States of America (down -14.1%), Egypt (down -12.8%), France (down -11.1%) and
Lithuania (down -10.9%).

8. Saudi Arabia: $1.15 billion (up 10.9%)
9. Israel: $1.12 billion (down -3.4%)
10. Oman: $1.09 billion (up 5.8%)
11. Egypt: $978.3 million (down -12.3%)
12. Jordan: $872.5 million (up 5.4%)
13. Algeria: $807.7 million (up 9.3%)
14. Belgium: $785.5 million (down -0.3%)
15. Iran: $568.3 million (2019 data unavailable)

The Russian Federation generated the highest surplus in the international trade of fertilizers. In turn, this
positive cashflow confirms Russia’s strong competitive advantage for this specific product category.
