If only 2020 hadn’t redefined the meaning of a hotspot, then we’d all be gladly planning another jet-setting holiday
around Europe, Asia or the Americas right now. Alas, the world isn’t back to normal just yet and as we wait for the
Covid-19 vaccine and borders to reopen, we can assume that a holiday within Australia is a safe and smart choice for
2021.
So what does travel look like for us this year? After the cancelled trips and dashed plans of 2020, we can happily
share that domestic travel is booming right now. “Australia’s relative isolation from the rest of the world, coupled
with our sparsely populated land have never been more precious and desirable amongst travellers,” says Tourism
Australia managing director Phillipa Harrison.
“Demand for sustainable tourism practices is also increasing as more and more people acknowledge travel as a
positive force for good. Based on Covid-19 and what we saw following the summer bushfires, we anticipate that the
wellbeing of people, and our natural environment will be key considerations for many travellers in 2021.”
With this is mind, Tourism Australia has shared seven key takeaways and trends for wanderlusting Aussies this year,
which you can read below.

1. Wide open spaces

One thing our sunburnt country really has? Space, and lots of it. “With people craving wide-open spaces, fresh air
and nature more than ever, Australia’s natural paradises will be more desirable in 2021,” says the Tourism Australia
trend report. According to its most recent consumer research, the Consumer Demand Project, “destinations boasting
wide-open spaces feel safer for travellers - and, after spending more time at home last year than ever before, people
are developing a new appreciation for being out in nature.” Amen.

2. The road trip is back, baby

In a country as big as Australia, driving is almost a given on any holiday. And with social distancing and restrictions
still in place, driving holidays make sense. “A trip on the open road offers travellers freedom and independence. Cars
are a reliable, safe and hygienic way to travel and Australia’s vast landscapes provide endless opportunities to hit the
road and discover something new.”
According to Tourism Australia research, 55 per cent of Australian travellers are intending to take an interstate road
trip in the next 12 months. On the road trip hit list? Visiting regional areas and small towns, outdoor adventure
activities and visiting new destinations to participate in food and wine experiences.

3. Travel that gives back

These days, travellers are looking to spend in places that matter – and use travel as a force for good. “This can take
many forms: as simple as supporting local businesses by shopping big at a local winery, bakery or butcher, to getting
hands-on with bushfire restoration efforts via recovery tours and experiences such as planting a tree to help re-
establish koala habitats in affected areas,” says Tourism Australia.
With Australia recently winning the ‘Community Restoration’ award in Lonely Planet’s Best In Travel awards,
recognising the community efforts to rebuild communities and preserve Australian wildlife in the aftermath of the
summer 2019/20 bushfires, it’s clear we’re a nation with community-minded spirit.
Furthermore, in Booking.com’s Future of Travel Report it showed that 41 per cent of Australian travellers want to
travel more sustainably in the future, with Covid-19 increasing our awareness about responsible choices. And 62 per
cent expect the travel industry to offer more sustainable travel options and more than half (52 per cent) of travellers
will consider reducing waste and/or recycling their plastic when traveling again.

4. Rediscover our First Nations

With most travelling Aussies grounded until further notice, now is the perfect time to discover the rich cultural
history of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. Each year sees a growing interest in Indigenous tourism
experiences, with a 28 per cent increase between 2018 and 2019 alone. This is set to only grow, and there are a
number of experiences, from walking rock art tours to Aboriginal Bush Food tours on offer around the country to
dive into.

5. Travel to regenerate
Many of us have long used travel as a way to recharge our batteries, but this will become even more important in
2021. “Soft adventure experiences like multi-day walks and wellness travel (i.e. spa holidays, yoga retreats) have
been growing in popularity over the past few years, and the pandemic has only amplified the desire for this style of
holiday,” says Tourism Australia’s report. “Destinations and experiences that leave travellers feeling calm and
rejuvenated - whether it's an all-inclusive multi-day hike or an off-grid eco-cabin stay - are expected to be popular
with travellers.”
Booking.com’s Future of Travel Report backs this up, with 51 per cent of surveyed travellers saying ‘relaxing trips’
were there preferred type of holiday, followed by beach breaks (40 per cent) and city trips (29 per cent).

6. Taste local
As a nation of wine and food lovers, Australia has no shortage of culinary and agricultural experiences to try. “The
rise of agritourism gives visitors an authentic taste of a place and an insight into the culture of the destination, with
everything from intimate wine tastings to luxury helicopter charters,” says Tourism Australia. “Whether this is
visiting farms, overnight farm stays, tasting local produce, experiencing country life and interacting with animals,
agritourism is more popular than ever. In fact, it was found that Aussie families in particular are increasingly looking
to agritourism to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life in the city.”

7. Hitting the Aussie icons

Everyone has a bucket list, and with many travellers eschewing overseas holidays for local trips, travel restrictions
place a new emphasis on those I’ll-do-it-one-day experiences. “Aussie travellers have a unique opportunity this year
to look at their bucket list and actively seek out iconic Australian experiences they might have previously put off in
place of an international holiday - from climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge, to visiting Uluru or the Great Barrier
Reef,” says Tourism Australia.
In fact, this localised, experiential approach is just what Australia's tour operators and regional destinations need to
stay afloat. Think: surf lessons, wine tours, museums and more.
