L-6 NERVOUS SYSTEM AND SENSE ORGANS

I. DEFINE THE FOLLOWING:

1. Define neurons.

A. Neurons are the nerve cells that bind together to form a nerve. They have
special thread like structures called fibres. Each nerve is a bundle of fibres.

2. Define mixed nerves.

A. These nerves do both the functions, i.e. they carry the messages to the brain
as well as carry orders from the brain.

3. Define motor nerves.

A. These are the nerves that carry orders from the brain or the spinal cord to
muscles and glands. These messages result in the movement of muscles and
secretion by glands.

II. NAME THE FOLLOWING:

1. Name the three main parts of the brain.

A. Cerebrum, cerebellum, medulla

2. Name the receptors that signal the brain when you are hurt.

A. Pain receptors.
3. Name the four types of taste.

A. Sweet, salt, sour and bitter.

4. Name the nerves that bring messages from the sensory organs to the brain.

A. Sensory nerves.

5. Name the muscles that hold and control the shape of the lense.

A. Ciliary muscles.

III. Differentiate between the following:

1. Sensory nerves, motor nerves, and mixed nerves

Ans-

Sensory nerves Motor nerves Mixed nerves

glands.
2. Cerebrum and Cerebellum

Ans:

Cerebrum Cerebellum
1. It is the largest part of the brain. 1. It lies beneath the cerebrum.
2. It controls our speech, memory, 2. It controls our voluntary
intelligence and senses. movements like walking, dancing
and swimming etc.
3. It helps us to think, learn and 3. It helps us to maintain our balance.
remember.

IV. ANSWER THE FOLLOWING:

Q1. What is the nervous system consists of?

Ans- The nervous system consists of brain, spinal cord and the nerves. The brain
gets its signals from various parts of the body through the nerves. It processes
them and signals back for action in a split second.

Q2. How is our brain protected?

Ans- Our brain is delicate and well protected. It is surrounded by sacs filled with
fluid; these serves as cushions. The brain and the fluid sacs are covered by hard
bony skull protects the brain from shocks jerks and bumps.

Q3. What precautions should be taken to protect our ears?

Ans- i. Ears should be protected from hard blows and very loud noises as they
can get damaged.
ii. If any small insect or object accidently get into our ears, we should immediately
go to a doctor.

iii. Do not let water enter our ears.

iv. Never clean your ears with sharp or pointed things as it could cause injury to
eardrum and can lead to infection.

Q4. How can you keep your skin healthy?

A. To keep our skin healthy,

i. We should take a bath everyday with soap to clean away dirt, dust and germs
from the skin.

ii. We should always wear clean and loose clothes to allow free circulation of air.

iii. We should not wear other people’s clothes to avoid skin diseases.

V. WRITE SHORT NOTES ON:

Write a short note on the three main parts of the brain and draw a diagram

of the brain showing the three parts.

A. The three main parts of the brain are:

CEREBRUM:

Cerebrum is the largest part of the brain. It makes 90% of brain tissues. It has
many grooves and folds. Cerebrum controls speech memory and intelligence. It
also controls our senses.
CEREBELLUM:

It helps to control our voluntary movements like walking, dancing, painting etc. it
helps in muscle movement and maintain our body balance.

MEDULLA: Medulla is known as the brain stem. It connects to the spinal cord, a
cable of nerves through which messages pass between the brain and rest of the
body.

It controls our involuntary actions like breathing, blood circulation , heart beat etc.

VII. GIVE REASON:

1. When we have a blocked nose, the food we eat does not taste good- give
reason.

A. We experience flavour through our taste receptors and smell receptors. So the
food we eat when our nose is blocked does not taste good.
2. We pull our hands back when we touch a thorn- Give reason.

A. A message from nerves called pain receptors travel along the nerves to the
spinal cord. A new message travels back to the muscles of our hand, in response
we jerk our hands away.
