What’s In

How often do you stay in a computer laboratory room or computer shop? Do

you remember the different parts of a computer? Do you know the different tools and
equipment to repair computers and its parts?

3
To complete hardware repairs, it is important to have a toolkit that should
contain all of the necessary tools. As you gain experience, you will learn which tools
to have available for different types of jobs. Hardware tools are grouped into these
four categories:
 Electro-Static Discharge (ESD) tools
 Hand tools
 Cleaning tools
 Diagnostic tools

What’s New

Are you familiar with the different tools and equipment to be used in computer
hardware servicing? Do you know their appropriate used?
Well, in this lesson we will learn them one by one. Are you ready? Let’s get
learning!!! But before we get deeper, I just want you to do an activity below.

Activity: Name that Thing!

Direction: Identify the tools below. Write your answer on the box provided.

For example:
Wire Cutter

Tweezer Needle-nose plier Compressed air Parts organizer

Loopback adapter Torx screwdriver Multimeter Lint-free cloth
Philips head screwdriver Anti-static wrist srap

1. 2.

3. 4.

5. 6.

4
7. 8.

9. 10.

Great job! You are slowly learning to identify the different hand tools that are
necessary in computer hardware repairs in school and in your workplace.
Keep going!

What’s It?

Have you fill in the missing letters of the words on our first activity from the
previous page? If so, let us see if your answers are correct. But before going deeper
with our lesson, here’s some information that could help you more in this lesson.
Enjoy!

Electro-Static Discharge (ESD) Tools

Static electricity is easily generated by friction on carpets, tile flooring,
clothing, hair, fabric, and etc. The friction of moving air alone will charge suspended
particles and cause the build-up of static electrical charges on people and objects in
the environment. Grounded antistatic work mats used with antistatic wrist straps
provide the most basic means for the controlled discharge of electrostatic electricity.
Examples of ESD Tools are as follows:

Anti-static wrist strap - Used to prevent ESD

1. damage to computer equipment.

Anti-static Mat - Used to stand on or place

hardware on to prevent static electricity from
2. building up.

Hand Tools
A hand tool is a device for performing work on a material or a physical system
using only hands. Hand tools can be used manually or electrically powered, using
electrical current. Examples of Hand Tools are as follows:

5
Flat Head Screwdriver - Used to loosen or tighten slotted
1. screws.

Hex Driver – is used to tighten nuts in the same way that a

2. screwdriver tightens screws.

3. Needle-Nose Pliers – Used to hold small parts.

Philips Head Screwdriver – Used to loosen or tighten

4. cross-head screws.
Torx Screwdriver - Used to loosen or tighten screws that have a
star-like depression on the top, a feature that is
5. mainly found on laptop.

6. Wire Cutter – Used to strip and cut wires.

7. Tweezers – Used to manipulate small parts.

Flashlight – Used to light up areas that you cannot see

8. well.

Cleaning Tools
Having the appropriate cleaning tools is essential when maintaining or
repairing computers. Using these tools ensures that computer components are not
damaged during cleaning.
Lint-free Cloth – Used to clean different computer
1.
components without scratching or leaving debris.
Compressed Air – Used to blow away dust and debris
2. from different computer parts without touching the
components.

Cable Ties – Used to bundle cables neatly inside

3. and outside of a computer.
Parts Organizer – Used to hold screw, jumpers, fasteners
and other small parts and prevents them from getting
4. mixed together.

6
Diagnostic Tools
Computers are easier to use and more dependable with each new generation
of hardware and operating system update, but that does not mean they are problem
free. Here are the most popular tools for diagnosing your computer problems:

Multimeter – Used to test the integrity of

1. circuits and the quality of electricity in
computer components.

Loopback Adapter – Used to test the

2. functionality of computer ports.

What’s More?

Activity 1: FILL-IN THE MISSING LETER!

Direction: Fill in the missing letter to reveal the word that best describes the
statements below.
For example:
Used to tighten nuts in the same way that a screwdriver tightens screws.

use of the tools, field experience in their safe use, and following
the manufacturer’s guidance and instructions for that specific tool.
________ 2. When obtaining the tool, all the associated tooling and
consumable parts as recommended by the manufacturer, must be
included.

________ 3. The safe use of a tool depends on using the tool for the purpose
for which it was designed and also for other purposes where it can
be used as substitute where tool is not available.
________ 4. All tools should be kept in good condition with regular
maintenance.
________ 5. Preparing for a task includes only knowing the task to be done.
________ 6. Preparing for a task includes also the sequence of task to be done.
