Sir Humphry Davy
Sir Humphry Davy was best known as a chemist and inventor. When he was only 23,
he was appointed lecturer at the Royal Institution of London. He did very important work at
the Royal Institution of London during his time, now called the Royal Institution of Great
Britain. His scientific discoveries and books made it possible for other scientists to make
their own discoveries and inventions relating to electricity.
Davy invented the safety lamp an invention that helped coal miners to work safely in
underground mines. During his time, there were many explosions in coal mines. The miners
used lamps to help them see in the dark. The accidents were caused by the underground
gas or firedamp catching fire, due to the open flames from the lamps that the miners carried.
Worried over the number of people who were killed in mine explosions, the coal mine
owners went to see Davy and asked him to try to help them. Using his knowledge of
chemistry and his excellent skills in scientific testing, Davy made a discovery. He found that,
although firedamp was a gas, it could not pass-through tiny holes.
So, Davy made a safety lamp-named the Davy lamp-that could burn oil to give out
light. However, it had a metal frame with tiny holes to keep out the firedamp and prevent the
flammable gas from catching fire and exploding. This invention successfully prevented any
firedamp outside the lamp from becoming hot enough to catch fire.

Comprehension
A Cruise
by Betty A. R.

As I write this, I am travelling on a cruise ship with my aunt. The whole family were
coming, but my dad had to work, and my mum stayed with him. It always happens. My
brother is here as wel, but I am trying not to see him! I am glad my grandparents stayed at
home. They get seasick.
The ship is huge. There are great swimming pools – one is indoors, and the other is
on the top deck. There are lots of restaurants and cafes. I have got a favourite cafe that
serves delicious fruit juice. I always get lost trying to find it because it is a long way from our
cabins.
We are going to stop in a port tomorrow. It is on one of the smaller islands in the
Caribbean Sea, but I do not recall the name of the port. I do not think there is much to do
there, but I want to find a present for my mum.
My cabin is small, but I really like it. There is no shower in the room, but I have got
my own TV and there is Wi-Fi. The best thing is the balcony. I can sit and look at the sea.
There are lots of big fish that follow the ship. I love it when they jump out of the water.
I am going for a swim now and then my brother wants me to watch him play a crazy
ball game. It is not hard to play, just boring to watch.
