Library serves as a resource centre knowledge and information, aims to develop a


comprehensive collection of books, journals, News papers, Thesis, Back Volumes, E-Resources,
CD-ROM etc., for faculty and students of the University and acts an efficient dissemination of
knowledge centre.

THIRUVALLUVAR LIBRARY

VISION

To develop the University Library as a vibrant Resource Centre for supporting academics
and research communities ensuring a knowledgeable and prosperous society.

MISSION

developing collections, facilitating and effective use of information resource.

❖ To develop Institutional Repositories building collections based on the user


requirements and cutting edge value

❖ To introduce new technologies in the Library

ABOUT THIRUVALLUVAR LIBRARY

Periyar University Library was established in the year 1997 with 1500 books. The
university Library Block with a built up area of 2527 sq.ft, with spacious area. The
Thiruvalluvar Library has more than 98,482 Volumes of text and reference books on various
disciplines. Library is having 124 National and International print journals and 13 leading
News papers. The central Library having 1541 M.Phil Thesis and 2715 Ph.D Thesis. The
Library having resources through INFLIBNET N –List , DELNET ,,Springer link, J-Gate
plus, ISID, and Web of Science Database. Springer, Cambridge, Wiley-Blackwell, JSTOR,
Emerald link is available for Faculty members and students reference. Library has also made
provisions for students to refer IAS, IPS and other competitive exam books for preparing their
examinations. Library is having more than 4,448 Back Volumes for Ready Reference Service
to the users. The facility of “Open Access System” RFID and Intelligent shelving system (self
issue and self return) adopted in the Central Library and provides its service to meet the
requirements of P.G. Students M.Phil., Ph.D. scholars and faculty members of the University.
A well – stocked library is an asset to the University.

WORKING HOURS:

Week Days: 8.00 A.M. to 7.00 P.M.

Saturday and Sunday: 10.00 A.M. to 5.00 P.M.


Circulation counter shall be closed 15 minutes before the closing of the Library.

RULES & REGULATIONS

General Instruction:

 Library materials should be handled with utmost care. Nobody should write damage or
make any mark on any of the library materials.
 Readers should not replace books or journals back on the shelves, but are requested to
leave them on the reading tables after use.
 Library Materials should not be taken from one corner to another, without the knowledge
and permission of the library staff. All members are required to deposit belongings at the
property counter at their own risk. The library is not responsible for any loss or damage
to the same.
 Suggestions for purchasing books and improving the library services are welcome.
 Using mobile phones inside the library is strictly prohibited.

MEMBERSHIP:

 Members ID card is Bar-coded and the same is used as Library ID card.


 While returning/issue books from the library, members should ensure that their books are
duly discharged.
 Books are issued from the issue counter between 9.00 AM to 5.00 PM.
 Books can be recalled in case of an urgent demand for the same..
 The Librarian has the power to cancel the ID cards and refuse admission to anyone who
violated the rules and regulations of the library or indulges in any other type of
misconduct.
 Member should return all publications borrowed from the library before proceeding on
any kind of long leave.

CONDITION OF LOAN:

 Library ticket is not transferable.


 The borrower is fully responsible for the books borrowed on his ID Card.
 An amount of RS.1/- is collected as overdue charges per day, per transaction after due
date.
 Absence and illness are not an acceptable excuse for exemption from paying an overdue
charge. In calculating the overdue charge only University holidays are left out of the
reckoning. If the due date falls on a University holiday, the book may be returned on the
next working day without any overdue charges.
 The Librarian may recall a book at any time before its due date.
 If the Librarian considers that a borrower has not returned the books within a reasonable
time of its due date as indicated in the recall notice, as the case may be, the borrower is
liable to pay the cost of the book plus the prescribed overdue charges.
 If a book belonging to a set is lost, the borrower will be charged for replacing the entire
set.
 In case students lost the books issued to them they should report it immediately in writing
to the librarian to avoid accumulation of fine. They will be allowed a grace period of one
week to confirm the loss in writing, to initiate the process of recovering the cost of the
books. In case they produce the books after the grace period, they will have to pay the
prescribed fine.
 Textbooks borrowed for internal reference should be promptly returned. Non – return of
textbooks, during the examination period, will be reported to the Head of the department
for necessary action. Apart from this, the student has to pay the fine fixed by the
concerned authorities at that time.
