Humans, as complex beings, cannot be studied by mere sciences or arts alone.

Social Science develops different ideas and methods to explain and interpret various
phenomena experienced by humans. In this learner’s packet, we will study two of the
major social science ideas, namely, institutionalism and feminist theory. We will
uncover how these ideas contributed to the interpretation of various phenomena.
As a senior high school learner and future advocate of change, it is
advantageous that you possess relevant knowledge to understand social phenomena
and discern among alternatives.

FEMINIST THEORY
The struggle for equality for both sexes has existed since time immemorial.
Every nation has difficulties defining the structural problems that affect the view on
how women should be treated. As society progresses, the women’s movement
responded to the needs of the time. People incorrectly believed that feminism is all
about pursuing women’s rights and their superiority over men. But in truth, the goal of
feminism is the equality of all sexes.

Feminism as a Social Theory
It must be clearly understood that as a social theory, there is a shift of
perspective. With the introduction of feminism, policies and perspectives are now
inclusive as females become social actors. It does not merely focus on marginalized
women, but rather equality in terms of interaction. In the past, due to
misrepresentation, women were classified as the marginalized and most vulnerable
group. However, because of the rigorous struggle for equality, women can already find
their way to be represented in the bureaucracy. There has also been the
acknowledgment of women’s role and contribution to nation-building.

Gender Equality as a Social Movement

Gender equality, being a fundamental human right, is necessary to achieve
peace in all aspects of life. It is believed that gender equality does not depict any social
or political differences in terms of significance. According to the Philippine
Commission on Women, in the article Philippines drop 8 places in gender equality,
remains top in Asia, “The Philippines remains the top country in Asia in terms of
closing the gender gap” as per the Global Gender Gap Report 2020 of the World
Economic Forum, it denotes that as applied in Philippine setting, the appreciation and
value of this social movement is visible. Thus, it reflects how gender equality is
respected by every Filipino.

INSTITUTIONALISM
Institutionalism is a new approach that focuses on the institution's study and
how it affects individual's and groups' behavior. It started its academic focus on
bureaucracy. It aims to explain the correlation between institutional policies and how
it affects individuals’ and groups' behavior.
Institutionalism is widely used in Political Science, focusing on institutions, and
applying multi-disciplinary approaches such as rational choice theory, feminism, and
behaviorism to interpret and predict social phenomena.
The evolution of institutions is affected by how civilization behaves. It could be
referenced back to the recorded earliest civilization. For example, the idea of
Constitutionalism can be traced back to when subjects of every city-state began to
question authorities by which such idea has been evolving through their experiences.
The type of democracy began to change when there was already the awareness that
one must participate in government conduct.
It only proves that institutions are directly affected by the ideology developed in
a particular population. Ideology influences institutions. A country falls into a cycle of
conflicts and struggles under various circumstances. Such struggles affect the
economic and political environment, leading to inefficiency in addressing the people's
needs and neglecting fundamental principles directed in the promotion of peace and
stability.
