(5) Executive Summary

Philippines have high temperature, humidity, and abundant rainfall that can cause dryness,
discoloration and hyper pigmentation of the lips, which is a common condition. Through the use of lemon
extract and coconut oil as a natural remedy to prevent lip problems. On the other hand, coconut oil has an
effective treatment such as moisturizing the dryness of the lips. Lip problems are probably a common
occurrence for everyone, and they can be either harmless or serious health issues. Because there are no oil
glands on the lips, the skin is thinner and more sensitive than the skin on the rest of the body. As a result,
they are vulnerable to drying and chapping. This research aims to help people especially the students of Pilar
National Comprehensive High School who are experiencing lip problems. However, the target respondents
who are experiencing this type of conditions are able to use the product. This experimental study determines
if this product should highly be applicable as a medical treatment or not. The combination of lemon extract
and coconut oil properties can effortlessly be a viable way to see the progress appearance of the lips; it can
moreover be utilized to avoid lip conditions.

(6) INTRODUCTION

In our society, we are having a cold and dry weather which may lead us in having chapped lips
that is the result of dry and cracked skin on our lips. Sun exposure, frequently licking our lips and
dehydration also lead us in having this. Some people are already affected by this kind of situation but they
still doesn’t want to get treated because they’re afraid on the safeness and effectiveness of the kind of
treatment they would get.

Lips is an essential aspect of the human face and play a critical role in facial expression, phonation,
sensation, mastication, physical attraction, and intimacy. The upper and lower lips are known as,
respectively, labium superius oris and labium inferius oris. Both the upper and lower lip contains mucosal
membrane, vermilion, and cutaneous surfaces. The lips aid in eating by holding food within the mouth and
creating an airtight seal that prevents liquids from spilling out of the oral cavity (Meghan and Patrick,
2021).

Lemon has natural bleaching and exfoliating properties. We can squeeze half of lemon and apply the
juice directly on your lips daily or you can also take a thin slice of lemon, sprinkle a bit of sugar on top and
rub it on your lips. It will exfoliate dead cells for fresher skin to appear. The acid in lemon also help remove
blackness and bring back the original lip colour by applying it (Sushmita, 2020)

Coconut Oil is also considered an emollient. Emollients are non-cosmetic moisturizers that help keep
the skin moist, and they’re primarily used to protect the skin. They trap moisture in your skin, so these tend
to work best immediately after bathing. However, you can apply them throughout the day as needed,
especially when considering your lips, which lose moisture more rapidly than the rest of the body. Using
coconut oil for chapped lips is a relatively straightforward process. Simply apply a few drops to your lips
and dab gently with your fingers until the oil sets. Some people use coconut oil as a wrinkle treatment.
When you use the oil for your lips, you may help your surrounding skin look smoother and more radiant
(Kristeen, 2018).

a. (6.1) RATIONALE/SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

RATIONALE

This study focuses on using lemon extract and coconut oil as a lip therapeutic. We’ve found out that
Lemon is a natural bleaching agent that helps in lightening the lips and sugar is a gentle exfoliator that helps
in getting rid of dead cells and this remedy works well to naturally lighten the lips if the skin of your lips and
around your lips isn’t too sensitive or chapped. The primarily benefit of Coconut Oil is its moisturizing
effects that makes it ideal for chapped lips. Our lips are particularly sensitive to moisture loss because the
skin is thin and they’re exposed to the elements more so than other parts of our skin. It’s better to conduct a
research that would benefit each and every person in our society who has chapped lips that is wishing to be
treated in a safe and effective way.

SIGNIFICANCE

It provides a lip therapeutic to help each and every person who experienced having chapped lips.
