Forms of Energy Lab FREEBIE
This lab is designed to guide students through experiencing the forms
of energy in a meaningful real-life way. This lab should be completed
following student input activities that build the base knowledge
students need on the concept.
Student Input activities that help build their knowledge prior to the
“experience” portion are: Intro/Pre-Learning Activity, Informational
Text with key terms, graphic organizer, and summary writing, anchor
chart and interactive science notebook input. These portions of
covering the standard are included in a complete lesson set.

**The following lesson plans are written in the order I use them without a
timeframe, so that you can determine the timing for each activity based on

Differentiation
Pre-Learning/ Anticipatory Activity: Students will complete the
Energy Bingo Scavenger Hunt to get familiar with the forms of energy in
the real world.

Input: Teacher Read


Aloud, Reading
Have students read the informational text, Forms of Energy, and in Pairs, Think-
determine the meaning of each key term using context clues from the Pair- Share
text. They will complete the graphic organizer after reading the text. before writing,
Small Group
You can allow students to discuss their thoughts on the reading in pairs Instruction,
or as class, then allow them to write a summary using the key terms
from the text.
Complete the anchor chart as a class. Students can write the anchor
charts in their Interactive Science Notebook on the input page. Or, they
can cut and glue the interactive anchor chart in their notebook.

Anchor Chart
Use the anchor chart on the next page to help students process the
new information. This is an input activity that gives them the
background they need to understand the “experience” part of the
lesson, think critically, and explore the topic.
Draw your own anchor chart on chart paper to post in your
classroom.
Students can draw anchor charts with you in their Interactive Science
Notebooks. Or, you can print the blank copy for students to fill out.
I have also provided an additional printable to be used with the blank
copy to make it more interactive.

In the Complete Bundle, two sizes are provided so you can make it a
student sheet, or a smaller option for using in notebooks.

Forms of Energy Mystery Investigation Stations

Students will rotate through the five stations and decide which form(s) of
energy is represented at each station.
Station Set-up
Energy Mystery #1 – Mechanical and Electrical (have a toy that shows motion-
battery powered train on a track)
Energy Mystery #2 – Electrical and Light (set up a circuit with a switch and a light
bulb)
Energy Mystery #3 – Thermal (hand warmer with a thermometer on it and one
on a cold counter)
Energy Mystery #4 – Sound and Electrical (Speaker playing music)
Energy Mystery #5 – Electrical and Light and Sound (A computer or tablet
playing a video on repeat)

Set up the 5 stations for the students to rotate through each in groups. You can
place a number card at each station to help keep it organized.

An investigation sheet is provided for students to complete.
