5. TELLING THE TIME

• The common questions are:

• A more polite way to ask for the time, especially from a stranger is:

THERE ARE TWO COMMON WAYS OF TELLING THE TIME

1) Say the hour first and then the minutes. (Hour + Minutes)

6:25 ----> It's six twenty-five

8:05 -----> It's eight O-five (the O is said like the letter O)

9:11 -----> It's nine eleven

2:34 -----> It's two thirty-four

2) Say the minutes first and then the hour. (Minutes + PAST / TO +
Hour)
• For minutes 1-30 we use PAST after the minutes.
• For minutes 31-59 we use TO after the minutes.

EXAMPLES:

2:35 -----> It's twenty-five to three

11:20 -----> It's twenty past eleven

4:18 -----> It's eighteen past four

8:51 -----> It's nine to nine

2:59 -----> It's one to three

A. When it is 15 minutes past the hour we normally say: (a) quarter past
+ (hour).
EXAMPLE:

7:15 -----> It's (a) quarter past seven

B. When it is 15 minutes before the hour we normally say: a quarter to


(hour).

EXAMPLE:

12:45 -----> It's (a) quarter to one

C. When it is 30 minutes past the hour we normally say: half past ____

EXAMPLE:

3:30 -----> It's half past three (but we can also say three-thirty).

D. O'clock
We use o'clock when there are NO minutes.

EXAMPLES:

5:00 -----> It's five o'clock

1:00 -----> It's one o'clock

E. 12:00
For 12:00 there are 3 expressions in English:

Note: To refer to more than one brother-in-law or sister-in-law etc. we add an

THE FAMILY MIX


Nowadays in many countries a person can get married more than once. These
are the terms used to describe the "new" members of the family when
someone gets remarried.
"Step-" means that you are related as a result of one parent marrying
again

stepfather: the (new) husband of your mother but not your biological
father

stepmother: the (new) wife of your father but not your biological
mother

stepson: the son of your (new) husband / wife (he is not your biological
son)

stepdaughter: the daughter of your (new) husband / wife (she is not


your biological daughter)

stepsister: the daughter of your stepmother or stepfather

stepbrother: the son of your stepmother or stepfather


Sometimes one of your parents gets married again and they have more
children.
half-brother: the brother you have only one parent in common with.

half-sister: the sister you only have one parent in common with.

10. DEMONSTRATIVE PRONOUNS


The words: This / That – These / Those are known as demonstrative, and are
used to show the distance between the speaker (subject) and the noun (what
are you talking about).

This; refers to singular nouns and near to the speaker.

This is my house.
Here This refers to a singular noun.

These; refers to plural nouns and far to the speaker.


These are our toys.
Here These refers to a plural noun.

11.INDEFINITE AND DEFINITE ARTICLE

▪ The definite article is the.


▪ The indefinite article is a / an.

The indefinite article or an:


The article a / an is used when we don't specify the things or people we are talking about:

▪ I met a friend.
▪ I work in a factory in New York.
▪ I borrowed a pencil from a passenger sitting next to me.

The indefinite article a is used before a consonant sound:

▪ a dog.
▪ a pilot
▪ a teacher.
▪ a university

NOTE:
Although 'university' starts with the vowel 'u', it is not pronounced as such. It is pronounced
as a consonant sound.

The indefinite article an is used before a vowel sound:

▪ an engineer.
▪ an elephant.
▪ an athlete

The definite article the:


It's used when the speaker talks about a specific object that both the person speaking and
the listener know.

▪ The car over there is fast.


▪ The president of the United States is giving a speech tonight.

When we speak of something or someone for the first time, we use a or an, the next time
we repeat that object we use the definite article the.

▪ I live in a house. The house is quite old and has four bedrooms.
▪ I ate in a Chinese restaurant. The restaurant was very good.

No article:
1. Do not use an article with countries, states, counties or provinces, lakes and mountains
except when the country is a collection of states such as "The United States".

▪ He lives in Washington near Mount Rainier.


▪ They live in Northern British Columbia.
▪ They climbed Mount Everest.

2. we do not normally use an article with plurals and uncountable nouns to talk about things
in general.:
