DEBATE

ARGUMENTS:
1) We strongly believe that the death penalty should not be abolished because it is the ultimate and
most necessary punishment for criminals who have committed the heaviest crimes. That
punishment will help to stop the rate of crime from rising. Such severe punishment is required to
deter people from committing murder and terrorism.
2)   The death penalty is required because "an eye for an eye" is appropriate, the punishment should
be proportionate to the crime, and moral balance to the criminal's wrongdoing. As a result, it will
help to show justice for the victims, their families, and society. People will no longer feel fear
about one day, those cruel criminals will be released outside. As we strongly believe that it is
very difficult to change the nature of a person, the evil still lingers in them, which is something
that prison reform cannot completely erase.
3)   With the development of medical devices, execution today is less painful and humane than
before. The death penalty involves a physician to ensure that the execution is not cruel and
unusual, and to ensure that the criminal receives medical care throughout the entire execution
process.
4) Prisons have to provide everything considered necessary for prisoners who are confined there—
some for an extremely long duration —because they are organizations where all parts of life are
undertaken and conducted. Therefore, the incarceration of many prisoners will cost a lot of
money such as the cost of building the prison, the cost of food and clothing for the prisoners.
According to new research, the average cost per prison was $33,274 (The Price of Prisons - The
Price of Prisons - Prison Spending in 2015, 2017), which is a very huge number. (Ngân)

Consolidate the above-mentioned argument with specific examples in Vietnam society.

1. Besides that, death penalty is legally regarded as punishment for particularly serious types of
murders in Vietnam. In fact, you can find many examples for this in real life. Let’s have a closer
look on these problems in your country: I’m sure you’ve already heard about the murder of 6
family members in Binh Phuoc province 7 years ago.
2. Killing all of family members just due to the conflict in love is an completely inhuman act of the
murderers without thinking. Despising the whole life of people as a game shows a disregard for
the existing laws of Vietnam and poses a serious threat to the social community. By that I mean,
Opening up a new path to continue their lives will create a potential danger to society as they can
plan revenge after being released from prison. That will provoke high concerns of victims and
their family and destroy a moral balance of all things.
3. There are a couple of arguments that because these two murderers truly feel regret and emotional
trauma, we should give them a chance to rewrite their life. Besides, when  they receive enough
intensive training, maybe they will do something meaningful to their social life. However, the
psychological wound cannot be immediately treated, even in the long term. Death penalty is
really a dire warning to deter those who intend to commit negative crimes and criminal must pay
for what they have done.
4. AND the final chapter of that story which has shocked the country ever is that both men were
sentenced to death for murder. So in this shocking example we can clearly see that, opposing to
abolish ‘death penalty’ is something people need to do because it will keep laws and order.

Rebuttal:
*Inhuman:
 Murderers have the right to kill people without charge, causing fear and confusion for the victim's
family. If they do not receive the appropriate punishment, is it fair ?
 In the old days, the death penalty had many types that were considered barbaric methods.
That was really Inhuman, however today, they are replaced by lethal injection.
 less costly than the death penalty. But in my opinion, the death penalty will cost more because:
+ Spending money on accommodation and feeding those people
+ must have a manager, cook for them, watchmen for fear they will escape
+ It costs money to build more prisons, takes up space
*Not a viable form of crime control:
 In the UK, the government has already abolished the death penalty and how is the statue of crime
rate in their country? According to Machin and Meghir's essay, in the United Kingdom their
crime rate had increased rapidly through the 1970s and the 1980s, the increase is far greater than
the rest of Europe and unexpected.
 Everyone has a fear of death, so if the death penalty is abolished, criminals will not see serious
consequences when committing crimes, they will not have fear, infer they will not be afraid,
causing disorder social self
 Without the death penalty, criminals would still commit their crimes again.
→ If we do not have the death penalty
many killers plan their plots ahead of time, because they know even if they get caught by the
policeman they are not going to be faced with a capital punishment. One who is a killer will
always be a killer and even if they are in prison their next target could be the inmates or the
guards.
 Also in between 1976 and 1977 in the Big Apple, 85 persons arrested for homicide had a
previous arrest for murder, six had two previous arrests for murder and one had four previous
murder arrests.
