Brigada Pagbasa: A Book Accentuating its Parts

To be able to read, a tool is very significant. A book, as an instrument,

includes various parts which lead to the realization of wisdom. More often, we
disregard the system behind the foundation of the book. Underlining what comprises
a good tool is a great way of acknowledgment.

Spine. The Department of Education is more than aware of the status quo of each
school, thus having Brigada Pagbasa as its inclusive program in Brigada Eskwela
as stated on DepEd Memorandum No. 048, s. 2021.

Cover. The proponents of the projects will attempt strategies that will encourage
students to read therefore aggravate, if not totally eradicate high population of
instructional readers – making Bayuinians independent readers. Furthermore, it will
address education - related challenges on numeracy besides contributing possible
solutions to the current problem of the school, the below average numeracy level.

Title page. In partnership with Project LINANG (Literacy in the New Normal
Adeptness and Nurturing Guild) and Project COUNT (Connect with Our Students,
Uplift their Numeracy Techniques), Bayuin National High School took part in
resolving one of the challenges of the new normal set-up which is to track the
reading capacity and numeracy skills of each student.

Preface. To students, whom we remember in crafting this project and for the
sustainability of the implementation, these are all for your sake, for
#SulongEdukalidad. We, your teachers, are with you despite this time of pandemic.

Table of Contents. Bayuin National High School, carefully plan and

comprehensively troubleshoot all the possible problems to be encountered – from
working committees, down to schedule, were scrutinized for smooth implementation.

Body. Brigada Pagbasa runs a four-day reading and literacy assessment drive,
reaching Malugay and Villareal being its farthest feeder barangays. The school
focused on the grade 7 and 8 students because they are the grade level primary
affected by the gap – the transition from traditional classroom set-up to modular
distance learning. Hearing each student enunciate words, makes the teachers more
motivated to pursue the project. As we encounter students with difficulty in reading
and solving basic math concepts, we are silently asking for this pandemic to end,
giving opportunity for the face to face classes.

Like books of old legends and myths, Brigada Heroes responded to support the
school in the implementation of the project. One of the volunteers, Mercedes L.
Lasac, a vlogger, also known as Kamangyan, inspires every Bayuinian as she
rescued those who are in need of assistance in reading. Likewise, Alumni
Representative, John Paul G. Burgos, also took part in the course of the project.
Sangguniang Barangay, lead in maintaining health and safety protocols and
communications with parents.

Index. The overflowing support from the stakeholders , volunteers Alumni, parents
and students from different feeder barangays and efforts of all Language and
Mathematics Teachers is said to be the strength of the school.

Interpretations:

There are 155 recipients of the Brigada Pagbasa, in which 75 students are from
grade 7 and 80 from grade 8 students respectively.

The Table A shows the reading performance of grade 7 both in Filipino and
English , wherein out of 75 students there are 57% or 43 learners fall in to
frustration level in English and 46% in Filipino.

The Table B shows that out of 80 participants from grade 8, 15% fall in
frustration level in English and 10% in Filipino.

The Table C shows the performance of grade 7 and 8 in numeracy. Based on

the initial pre-assessment activity, the performance of the learners lies below the
National Numeracy Level of 75%.

Since the results show that there is a great number of Instructional and
Frustration readers, there is a great challenge for teachers to improve the level of
numeracy and literacy performance of every learners.

Reading is the gateway skill that makes all other learning possible.

Bayuin National High School, being aware of the beauty conveyed by Brigada
Pagbasa, which gave birth to Project LINANG and Project COUNT, persists on
thinking of more improved strategies for its continuous implementation.
WASH HANDS, SAVES LIVES!

One year and counting into the pandemic, handwashing with soap and water
remains one of our best defences against the virus, along with other public health
measures such as maintaining physical distance, avoiding crowded places,
practicing cough etiquette and wearing a mask wherever recommended.

This is one of the driving forces of BNHS of doing the repairs of all handwashing
areas of the school. Putting up handwashing area per classroom and to all newly
constructed building. This project is initiated by BNHS clinic teacher, Ms. Maureen
Veronica S. Bidon. The repair of this facility lasted for one week with the help of our
utility guard Mr. Henry Manahan.

Hygiene is very simple action but a big problem if handwashing is not visible. Now,
BNHS is surely believe that we can beat the virus today and ensure better health
outcomes beyond the pandemic for our students.
