Live Drive PTO

-6-
General Description

Live drive PTO is only available on tractors fitted with dual clutch and consists of a
mechanical coupler that is used engage and disengage PTO drive.

Operation

In order to engage the PTO the operator must first depress the clutch pedal to the
bottom of the second stage. This will then disengage drive through the Ferguson
Pump. The operator can then move the selector lever into the engaged position, this
lever will in turn move a mechanical coupler rearwards in the centre housing locking
the Ferguson pump drive shaft to the PTO shaft. When the clutch is then released
the PTO will begin to turn.

NOTE: PTO engagement should only be carried out below 1200 Engine rpm.

To disengage the PTO the engine revs should be reduced, the clutch pedal can then
be fully depressed to the bottom of the second stage, and the selector lever moved to
the disengaged position, remove implement and refit PTO cap.

Single Speed IPTO

- 10 -
General Description

The single speed PTO allows the operator to engage and disengage the PTO drive
line using a lever on the operators platform.

The principle components of the system are a hydraulically operated multi-plate

clutch, and a mechanical spool.

The PTO clutch is located immediately to the rear of the linkage pump and is driven
from an extension of the linkage pump drive shaft. This shaft is driven from the cover
of the split torque transmission clutch, through the PTO reduction gears and the drive
shaft to the pump.

The rear extension of the pump is splined into the housing of the PTO clutch. Five
steel interplates are splined into the casing of the clutch. Five corresponding sintered
friction plates are splined to a central hub and brake disc. A large central spring holds
the clutch in the disengaged position. The main PTO shaft is splined to the drive hub
and brake disc.

Rotation of the PTO shaft is controlled by the hydraulic clutch. It occurs when the five
steel interplates and the five friction plates are forced into engagement by the piston,
which has oil pressure fed behind it.

The mechanical spool is located on the outside of the left-hand side cover and has
two positions PTO engaged or PTO brake engaged.

Two Speed IPTO

- 14 -
General Description

The 2 speed shiftable PTO allows the operator to change speeds between 540 and
1000 rpm.

The principal components of the 2 speed IPTO comprise of a hydraulically operated

multi-plate clutch, a spool type control valve and a intermediate reduction gear
mounted on the rear axle pinion shaft

The IPTO clutch is located immediately to the rear of the linkage pump and is driven
from an extension of the linkage drive shaft. This shaft is driven from the cover of the
split torque transmission clutch, through the PTO reduction gears and drive shaft to
the pump.

The rear extension shaft of the linkage pump is splined into the housing of the IPTO
clutch. Steel interplates are splined into the casing of the clutch, and corresponding
sintered friction plates are splined to a central hub and drive gear. A large central
spring holds the clutch in the disengaged position.

In the 540/1000 system the lower shaft runs with the linkage pump at 1000 rev/min at
approximately 2000 engine rpm. When the 1000-rpm shaft is inserted into the centre
housing, the drive is transmitted from the IPTO clutch straight to the PTO shaft giving
1000 rpm output.

When the 540-rpm shaft is inserted into the centre housing, the drive is transmitted
through a pair of compound gears to the PTO shaft giving a speed reduction.

To engage the PTO the operator moves the lever to the engaged position this moves
the spool in the side cover, which diverts oil into the hydraulic clutch.
Moving the spool to the off position allows the plates to disengage, whilst
simultaneously applying a brake to the hub of the reduction gears, to prevent oil drag
from rotating the PTO shaft.

Changing PTO speeds on tractors equipped with 540/1000
IPTO

On tractors equipped with the option of dual speed PTO 540/1000, it is necessary to
change the PTO output shaft to obtain the additional speed.

Procedure for changing the output shaft.

1. Jack up rear of tractor.

2. Remove PTO cover

3. Remove snap ring from rear PTO housing using pliers as shown below.

4. Grasp PTO shaft firmly and pull out of centre housing.

5. Reverse above procedure to refit other PTO shaft.

Operation of the IPTO brake

The oil feed from the pressure maintaining valve enters the control spool, travels to
the top of the modulation piston and repositions it to the base of the housing (Ready
for operation during clutch engagement). The oil then travels on to operate the PTO
brake.

The rest of the system is now open to sump, allowing the oil, which is being
dispersed by the large spring in the clutch to be returned to the transmission case,
via a drilling in the housing.

- 19 -
Operation of the IPTO clutch

The oil supply from the pressure maintaining valve enters the control spool and
travels to the clutch pack, where it rises to a pressure of approximately 2 bar. This
pressure then opens the small sump valve to allow approximately 5 bar pressure to
dumped. The remaining 10 bar (145 psi) pressure passes through the restriction, and
on to the modulation piston and starts to compress the spring and give an increase in
pressure to 10 bar (145 psi). Once the piston has reached full travel, back pressure
is felt down the line and to the other side of the small sump valve, with spring
pressure on this side of the valve it will now close the valve, and therefore stop the 5
bar leak. The pressure in the clutch pack will now rise to that of the pressure
maintaining valve. All this happens in about 1.5 seconds.

IPTO Pump

The IPTO side cover is supplied with oil from a pump, which is attached to the front
of the Ferguson linkage pump. This pump draws its oil through the Ferguson linkage
pump suction strainer and sends the oil to the IPTO side cover. The 17 bar system
pressure is maintained by a 17 bar Pressure Maintaining Valve, which is attached to
the pressure line and fixed inside the gearbox.

IPTO PMV
IPTO Pump

The pump feeds the oil to the IPTO side cover through a length of flexible hose, a
short length of steel pipe then feeds the oil into the spool in the side cover
