Ferguson Linkage Pump
MF 400 series tractors are fitted with a linkage pump (as shown). The linkage pump is driven
by its own drive shaft which forms part of the PTO driveline.
The direct PTO coming from the front of the gearbox is the speed in which the pump is being
driven at, on all two speed PTO systems the 540 PTO speed is achieved by a set of reduction
cluster gears mounted behind the pump.

Flow Type Output (litre’s/min) PTO Speed

Low 16.7 Single speed 540

High 27.6-28.0 Two speed 540/1000

Slight variations in flow will occur because of different rated engine speeds, oil temperature
and filter condition.
2
All pumps operate at the same relief valve pressure of 211 bar (3000 lbs. in ). The relief valve
can be adjusted without removing the pump from the tractor by either accessing through the
centre housing side covers or by removing the lift cover.

Pump Control Valve

The function of the control valve is to control the oil flow to and from the hydraulic
system. In order to carry out this function, it has 3 positions: "Intake", "Neutral" and
"Discharge".

The control valve has intake and discharge slots at either end and is moved into its
various operating positions by a vertical lever controlled by the linkage arrangements
within the top cover assembly. It is spring loaded to the intake position by the
oscillator body. The valve is oscillated to prevent it sticking and slides within a sleeve,
which has ports leading to the intake and pressure sides of the pump.

Fig. 1 Intake:
The vertical lever has moved to allow the valve to assume the intake position under
the influence of the spring. This allows oil to be drawn through the intake slots into
the pump. In this position, the lift arms would be rising.

Fig. 2 Neutral:
Show the valve in its neutral position, the intake and discharge slots being outside
the ports in the sleeve. In this position, the lift arms would be stationary.

Fig. 3 Discharge:
The valve is in its discharge position. The discharge slots are open to the pressure
chamber allowing oil to flow from the ram cylinder back to sump. In this position, the
lift arms would be lowering.

Response Control

-8-
Response Control

Response Control is used with soil engaging implements and draft control. It slows
down the rate of drop of an implement in work. Without response control, every time
a lowering signal occurred, the tractor would lose most of the transferred weight of
the implement. If the link arms are allowed to drop too fast, the weight of the
implement is supported by the soil, and not by the tractor. This results in a loss of
traction. By slowing the rate of drop of the lift arms, by controlling the speed of oil
leaving the lift cylinder, the tractor is always assured of carrying the implement
weight.

Response Control is adjustable to achieve the best weight transfer and performance
with draft controlled soil-engaging implements of all weights and sizes.

Draft Control Lowering

Draft Control – Compression Force in Toplink

- 10 -
Draft Control Operation

Moving the draft control lever down the quadrant moves the internal linkage, which
moves the control valve to its discharge position. As the implement enters the
ground, a force down the top link moves the internal linkage and the control valve to
neutral. Any variation in the force down the top link caused by undulations in the
ground, moves the control valve to lift or drop maintaining the implement at a uniform
depth. When the draft control lever is fully raised, the control valve moves to the full
intake position and when the lift arms reach their transport position, the position
control linkages move the valve to neutral.

Position Control – Implement Lowering

Position Control – Implement raising

- 12 -
Position Control Operation

Moving the position control lever moves the internal linkage, which moves the control
valve to discharge. As the lift arms lower, the lift-shaft rotates and the cam on the
lift-shaft and the linkage moves the control valve to neutral. For every position that
the position control lever is moved to, there is a position where the cam moves the
control valve to neutral. This allows the operator to hold the lift arms at any height he
desires. When the position control lever is moved to the transport position, the control
valve moves to intake and when the links reach their transport position, the cam
again moves the control valve to neutral.

Introduction to Static and Running Adjustments

The two types of adjustment, which can be carried out on the hydraulic lift cover, are
of the static and running type.

Static adjustments set the lift cover linkage approximately in the correct position prior
to the lift cover being replaced onto the tractor. These adjustments must be done in
the correct order, as one setting in most cases has an affect on the other. For total
piece of mind, while the lift cover is removed and on the bench, it is best to carry out
all of the settings for the optimum field performance.

Running adjustments are fine adjustments which set the operator controls (quadrant
controls) to the lift cover linkage and hence can only be carried out with the tractor
running, and with at least 380 to 420kg of weight on the lower links. These
adjustments must always follow static adjustments.

The running adjustments can be carried out on their own if the quadrants have
slipped out of adjustment and need re-setting.

Static Adjustments: Quadrant Positions

In order to carry out the various static adjustments on a lifthead it is necessary to

ensure that the quadrants or quadrant levers are in the correct positions.

Tractors without Seat Deck

Loosen all of the quadrant fixing bolts and rotate both the draft and position
quadrants to the middle of their securing slots, then tighten the bolts.

Tractors with Seat Deck

With the lifthead upside position the levers as follows.

Position Control Lever (1)

1. Transport.

Align Hole A on lever 1 with Hole C and secure with a pin.

2. Constant Pumping.

Turn Lever 1 Anti-clockwise until it stops. (No pin hole)

Draft Lever (2)

1. Sector Position.

Align Hole B on lever 2 with Hole C and secure with a pin.

2. Fully Raised

Turn Lever 2 Anti-clockwise until it stops. (No pin hole)

1. Draft Spring Internal End float:

Remove the tapered locking pin. Apply plenty of grease to all threads. Screw the
plunger into the yoke until all the end float has been removed and the spring is tight
to turn by hand. Refit the locking pin.

- 18 -
2. Draft Spring External End float:

Ensure that the draft control rod cannot obstruct the control spring plunger, by fitting
a suitable wedge between the draft rod adjusting bolt and the lift cover casting. If the
lift cover is fitted, move the draft control lever to the fully lowered position.

Refit the spring assembly into the lift cover housing and using MF 163, tighten the
retaining nut until the End float in the spring assembly has removed. Be careful not to
over tighten as this will compress the spring and cause the end float to return.

Refit the locking screw.

3. Draft Control Rod Adjustment:

Set the draft control quadrant (outside quadrant) to the fully raised position, and the
position lever to transport. Adjust the setscrew on the draft control rod to obtain a
clearance of 5.8mm between the setscrew and the casting.

- 20 -
4. Draft Control Neutral Setting:

Set the draft control link to the sector position, and the position control link to the
transport position using the locating pins.

Slacken the Allen screw and lock nut on the vertical lever to the end of its thread.
This will ensure that no interference from the position control linkage takes place.

FT5001 can then be fitted to the lift head.

With the tool installed, adjust the vertical lever pivot slide until the lever just contacts
the horizontal pin on the upright. Tighten the pivot slide bolt. Recheck the vertical
lever, and secure the bolt with the locking tab.

5. Position Control Neutral (transport) Setting:

Set the draft control quadrant to the fully raised position (no pin hole is available for
this position). Set the position control quadrant to the transport position with the
locating pin as shown.

Fit the special tool FT5001 to the top cover casting and adjust the vertical lever Allen
screw until the lever just contacts the horizontal pin on the tool. Tighten the lock nut
and recheck the position of the vertical lever.

Running Adjustments

Pre Conditions:

Refit the lift cover, hydraulic unions, pipes etc. Refill the tractor with oil to the correct
grade.

Place the draft control lever between the sector marks, and the position control lever
in the transport position.

Locate the top cover quadrants using suitable locating pins.

Adjust the length of the rods so that both the draft and position rods freely locate into
the top cover quadrants.

Attach a weight of 380 to 420 kg to the lower links.

NOTE: The top link must not be attached

Start engine, and expel any air from the hydraulics by operating the linkage at least
six times throughout its position.

All the following adjustments should be carried out at 800 to 1000 E.r.p.m and at
transmission oil temperature of 500- 600 C

- 23 -
1. Position Control Lever (transport) Setting

Place the draft control lever to the fully raised position, and the position lever in
constant pumping. Scribe a line from the lift cover to the lift arm, move the position
lever forward to the transport position. The line should separate by 3.5mm, if the
separation is not correct release the quadrant and turn to obtain the correct distance,
then tighten the quadrant bolts to lock it.

- 24 -
2. Draft Control Lever Neutral Setting. (Intermix and non
intermix)

Place the position control lever in the transport position (1), and the draft control lever
between the sector marks (2). The lower links should lower to the horizontal position.
If they don’t then adjustment is required. This is achieved by loosening the draft
quadrant securing bolts and rotating until the lower links are horizontal.

NOTE: The top link must not be attached when carrying out this adjustment.
