Designing of Electrical
Distribution system in a locality.

GUIDED BY PROF DJ & PROF RNC

INTRODUCTION An electric power system is a network of electrical

components deployed to supply, transfer, and use

electric power. An example of a power

system is the electrical grid that provides power to

homes and industries within an extended area.

Electrical distribution systems are an essential part of the electrical

power system. In order to transfer electrical power from an

alternating current (AC) or a direct current (DC) source to the place

where

it will be used, some type of distribution network must be utilized.

.
TO CREATE A ELECTRICAL DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM WE
REQUIRE
We Require Following five :
1. Total connected load.
2. Transformer sizing.
3. Circuit breaker sizing of transformer.
4. Circuit breaker sizing of each load.
5. Preparation of single line diagram.
What is a single line
The single-line diagram is the blueprint for electrical
system analysis. It is the first step in preparing a

diagram ? critical response plan, allowing you to become

thoroughly familiar with the electrical distribution
system layout and design in your facility.

The single-line diagram is

the vital roadmap for all future testing, service and
maintenance activities. The single-line diagram is like
a balance sheet for your facility and provides a
snapshot of your facility at a moment in time. It needs
to change as your facility changes to ensure that your
systems are adequately protected.
Single line diagram 1. Incoming service voltage

Components are : 2. Equipment rated current

3. Identification names of equipment
4. Frequency, phases
5. Transformer connection type, kVA,
voltages, and impedance
6. Current and Voltage ratios of
instrument transformers
7. Lightning Arresters
8. Circuit Breakers
Single Line Diagram of Power System

This Block Diagram shows the network starting from power distribution to transmission to distribution . Here it is
giving us a brief insight to systematic study of power systems.

But We will be dealing with the electrical distribution system i.e the part which contains distribution of power into
houses .
IMPORTANCE OF SINGLE LINE DIAGRAM
1.It is a primary resource to calculate short circuit
currents.

2.It shows the rating and capacity of electrical

equipment and circuit conductors and protection
devices.

3.Identification of problem location,in safety

conformity and staff safety can be benefited by the
use of single line diagram.

4.If in any case the inaccuracy in the connection and

the failure arises the updation of single diagram,
becomes easy even on regular basis.

5.The information from one line diagram can be widely

used to enhance the performance of service activities.

Diagram of
Locality
We have mapped the locality around us . Following is the electrical network map of our
region , thus , giving better understanding for drawing areas.

eeee
Design of electrical distribution created by us in AutoCAD.
In creation of the 1. We need to take in account the
Cable capacity and voltage drop
given electrical 2. Load on each phase must be
distribution system balanced load * distance should be
balanced like centroid of it
,following are the 3. System are more effective on
p2R- resistive loads then on reactive
loads
4. Pf should be high ideally
5. Capacitor based devices should be
used for power factor correction
6. Motor and pumps leads to high
reactive power due to inductive load
as it produces back emf
Precaution and 1. Distribution box must contain fuses
and MCB
safety . 2. It is important for Transformer to have
proper rating
3. Approximate Load calculation must be
done at planning stage
4. Transformer should be air cooled not
oil cooled since its risky and can catch
fire.
5. Sizing of cable is important too - we
need to account the diversity factor
and lightening protection parameters.
6. Need to follow guidelines from NBC
IMPORTANCE AND NEED OF ELECTRICAL
DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM
1.To meet the customer’s demand for energy after receiving the bulk electrical energy from
transmission substation.

2.This method is used to distribute power from where it is produced to where it is used can be
quite simple.

3.More complex power distribution system are used,to transfer electrical power from the
power plant to industries, homes, and commercial buildings.
Application 1. It is used for planning of electrical
networks.
2. It can help in calculation of required
parameters like sizing and control
3. It is the part of distribution so it can
be much useful for understanding
small details
