I. Introduction (Time Frame: 30 minutes)
In the previous lesson on academic writing, you learned how important it is to use formal and objective language.
You also learned how to use graphic organizers to organize information. These knowledge and skills will help you complete
the final task in this lesson, which is to write an informative text.
Informative texts provide information or facts about a particular topic. Some examples of topics include people,
animals, objects, and events.
Read “The Youngest Billionaire” and try to answer the
following questions:
1. Who is the subject?
2. What happened first?
3. What significant things can we learn from the subject?
4. What makes him extraordinary?
Observe how the writer conveys the person’s character and
outstanding accomplishment which makes him unique and
inspiring. The text is an example of a biographical sketch or bio-
sketch. It highlights only one or two aspects of a person's life. It is a
short description focusing on a person's biggest achievements or
significant life events.
A bio-sketch can be developed
into a biography, sometimes known as
a capsule biography which describes a
person's life and includes details like
name, birthdate, birthplace, parents'
names, major achievements, and
death.
WRITING A BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
A bio-sketch is similar to the structure of a paragraph which consists of a topic sentence, supporting sentences, and
a concluding sentence. Examine the previous example to see how it follows the structure.

Topic Sentence:
☐Introduce your subject.
☐Grab your reader’s interest with a good hook.
Example: “youngest billionaire in history”

Supporting Sentences:
☐Provide details and evidence in two (2) to three
(3) sentences.

Concluding Sentence:
☐Restate the main points about your subject.

Another guideline in writing biographies is using the third-person point of view. You should use third person pronouns
like he, she, his, hers, him, and her. Finally, a bio-sketch should have the following elements:

Writing a biographical sketch involves more than just researching a notable individual. You will discover and
appreciate the person’s contribution in our society. His or her real experiences will also teach you important life lessons. Most
importantly, you can use his or her successes and challenges to inspire and motivate other people.

Learning Task 1
Provided below are jumbled sentences. Arrange the sentences to compose a 5-sentence bio-sketch of Elon Musk - one of
the most successful entrepreneurs and is considered as “The Embodiment of Iron Man”. The topic sentence is done for you
as your guide.

☐He earned his degrees in physics and economics in University


of Pennsylvania.

☐He was born on June 28, 1971 in Pretoria, South Africa.

☐Then, Musk used the money from selling his first two ventures
- Zip2 and PayPal to explore his other interests which are
space and cars.

and electric cars.

☐In 2012, Musk and SpaceX made history and launched


Falcon 9 rocket into space with an unmanned capsule.
