2. what are the basic techniques of basketball?

➢ Fundamental skills are basic skills which are classified in to two groups :
Movement with the ball and movement without the ball.

➢ Under movement without the ball, we have techniques such as basic stance,
sliding, running, jumping, stopping, pivoting, feinting (fake) and screening. Under
movement with the ball, we have skills such as ball handling, passing, receiving,
dribbling, and shooting.

➜ The followings are the main skills or techniques in the game of basketball with
out any particular order :

1. Dribbling 6. Basic stance

2. Shooting 7. Offense

3. Defence 8. Pivoting and fake

4. Rebounding (ball handling) 9. Receiving a pass

5. Passing 10. Team play

The best players in the world have worked hard to develop each of these skills
inorder to reach the highest level of basketball.

The skills development remains as foundation of a basketball practise in the high


schools and at higher level of education even proffessional players that
participated in National association of basketbal (NBA) and also in other leagues
continue to develop their fundamental skills as part of their practice time and
warmups before the game.

Outside of basketball-specific skills, such as passing and shooting the need for
athleticism, jumping ability, speed and stamina are all important skills in the game
too.

For example without the ability to jump, skills such as rebounding or defence are
increasingly difficult.
Every skills in a basketball can be developed through training and practise.

Drills and techniques are used at all level of the game to teach players of the
game correct fundamental skills and to manufactures better players.

1. Dribbling

➢ Dribbling is the process by which a player has to move the basketball around
the court. This is done by continuously bouncing the ball between a players hands
and the floor. a player can not walk Aron's the court holding the ball or else this
will be deemed a travelling violations.

➢ It involves controlling the ball with your hands while running on the court or
standing still. Every position in a basketball team from centers to point guards
need to understand ball handling inorder to be effective offensive players.

➢ You can dribble faster by doing crossover moves, between the leg moves and
other advanced techniques.

➢ Dribbling fast will allow you to easily get past your opponents in the game.

➢ The best dribblers in basketball are massive assets to their teams on

the court, possessing the ability to cut by defenders without having to pass

the ball.

➢ Strong dribblers force extra defensive players to cover them, opening up the
scoring lanes for teammates and throwing the defence of balance.

➢ Dribbling is not so simple to do you can practise it on your own by dribbling


while standing in one spot or running through the cones, back and forth with as
partner and more. It may take sometime before you can master the fundamental
skills of basketball like this.

➢ Once players understand dribbling, they can use those skills to control the ball
especially during tricky strategic moves like the pick and roll.

Some of the most common uses of the dribble are :


- to move the ball in to the offensive area of the court.

- to manipulate offensive techniques.

- to advance the ball on the offence.

- to drive toward the basket for layup.

There are two basic forms of dribbling :

1. High dribble ( speed dribble) : is used to move faster across an open court area.

2. Low dribble (control dribble): is uesd for protection of the ball in congested
area.

Common errors in dribbling

◉ dribbling by looking at the ball ( fine centering rather than soft centering).

◉ dribbling in as stiff arm wrist finger action.

◉ failure to use peripheral vision.

◉ Failure to push the ball and using ''slapped ''or ''batted'' action.

2.Shooting

➢ Shooting is one of the fundamental the basketball skills that directly involves
scoring points, whether a player shoots as layup, mid range shot or as three
pointer. It is all encompassed the idea of shooting or scoring the basketball.

➢ Shooting as basketball may take the most specialized technique of any of the
five fundamental skills

➢ Shooting has become a talent that even major players and forwards have
mastered, completely changing the game.

Shooting ability depends up on :

1. proper technique 4. Confidence


2. Co-ordination 5. Relaxation

3. Concenration

➩ There are three common and basic types of shots. These are :
1. Set shot : is mostly used for long range shooting and free throw. it has two
types:

a. two hand set shot - you use your two hands to shoot the ball in to the

basket.

b. one hand set shot - In one hand set shot, you use your one hand to shoot
the ball in the basket. This shot is sometimeskniwn as free-throw.

2. Jump shot : is the most common one in basketball. it is mostly performed from
a dribble, running or standing position.

- To make an accurate shot, you need balance,coordination, and a clear view of


the target on the front ringof the basket.

3. Lay-up shot : is the most accurate shot, because you are very close to the board
while doing the lay up shot.

- It is used when you are running to the basket and performed from as jump that
carries you beneath the backboard.

➢ shooting is as highly crucial talent to have on the court since if the player you
are guarding can shoot. you will have much tougher time protecting them.

➢ If a player defensive has an ability to to shoot at high level, they become much
harder to guard, making shooting a very valuable skill to possess on the court.

➢ Through shooting drills, players learn hand placement, proper stance, long
distance shooting from half court or the free throw line.
➢ Basketball is all about putting the baskets more than your opponents, so
shooting is at the top of the skills you need to develop, if you can't shoot,
especially with how the game is played today you will not able to play.

➢ Shooting requires the ability to properly hold and through the ball in to the air
toward the basket while avoiding defenders. A proper shot requires precise
aiming, arm extension and lift from the legs.

There are different types of shot you need to learn, including jump shots, layups
and free throws.

3. Defence

◉ Defense is the skill that involves the most effort and


athleticism, as the goal is to prevent the other team from
getting good scoring chance.
◉It is a basic skills for defence involves standing near an
opponent while preventing them from moving towards their
desired location on the court.
◉ Defense is perhaps one of the most basic skills because it
protects teammates against opponents score thus setting up
scores for one's team.
◉ Without proper defence, a team will never win the
basketball game, making it a very essential skill for all to learn.
◉ Inorder to defend well during the game, defence players of
the team need to be able to stay infront of their opponents and
restrict their path to the hoop without fouling.
◉ While on defense, it is also important to be aware of all
other players on the court incade your teammates requires
help on defensive end.
◉ The best defensive players possess the ability to adjust to
situations quickly, move literally, blocking shots, control of
rebounds and anticipate passes to steal the ball.
◉ Defense in a basketball requires hustle, grit and dedication
to counteract the best offensively skilled players.
◉ Players of basketball must understand how to defend
against an opponent in one to one situations or man to man
defense.
◉ Defensive drills teach the proper Defensive stance and how
to defend in as half court and full court games. as well as to
defend in a perimeter situation along the sidelines and in close
quarters in a player those near the base line.
◉ In order to develop your defensive skills simply by standing
near another player as they attempt to move towards their
desired location on the court or successfully score points and
taking control of the ball or to block others person from
reaching an object.

4. Rebounding (ball handling)


➤ Rebounding means grabbing the ball that has been shot and
missed. so that your team can have another chance at making a
basket before another side gets to shot again.or
➤ Rebouding is the process of controlling missed shots on both
defensive and offensive ends.
➤ Rebounding is a key factor of acquiring and maintaining
possessions, which can subsequently give your team more
offensive chances.
➤ Securing the missed shots leads to more offensive opptette
ortunity and generally allows a team to score more points.
➤ To master or develop this basic basketball skills you lqmust
be quick enough to get in position before someone else does.
➤ Some of the best Rebounder's in NBA include Dennis
Rodman, wilt Chamberlain and others.
5. Passing
➤ Passing differs from other fundamental in that it involves as
two ways relation ship between the player making the pass and
the one who is to receive it.
➤ It is during the development of this aspect of the game the
players become aware of the need to adjust their level of
performance to that of the other playerso with whom they
must co-operate.
➤ passing is the act of throwing the ball either one handed or
two handed to another player. The fundamental requirement
ofevery pass are that they should be accurate, well timed, quick
and the proper type for that situation.
➤ Passing is the other option to move the ball around the court
outside of dribbling. A team that has as good passer can create
as good scoring chances to help their team to win more games
and score more points.
You can use passing :

◉ to throw the ball over defenders.

◉ to throw to as pivot person going in to the basket.

◉ to throw an easy to handle pass over as defensive

person.

◉ to throw to a teammate coming in to a pivot.

◉ to exploit a distinct height advantage under the

offensive basket.

- There are various types of passes that can be used

in playing basketball. These are :

1. Chest pass

2. Bounce pass - These are two hand passes.

3. Overhead pass

4. Baseball pass - one handed pass


5. Bonce pass - one hand and two hand pass

- Common errors in passing are :

◉ using blind passes.

◉ Failure to stay relaxed.

◉ Failure to keep head up and look at any free teammate.

◉ Unable to do follow through action.

6. Basic stance

➢ Basic stance is as position where you can be in as balanced and proper place
to start performing any activity in playing basketball.

➢ The basic basketballstance is a stance in which you put your feet shoulder
width apart, but one feet slightly ahead of the other. Knees slightly bent, weight
evenly distributed over both feet, and arms flexed and away from the body.

➢ Bending the knees lower so the center of gravity and gives stability.

7. Pivoting and Fake

➩ Pivoting is the skill used to fake an opponent when you possess a ball.

There are two kinds of pivot, namely forward pivot and reverse pivot.

◉ A forward pivot : is performed by keeping one foot in the place on the


ground and moving the other forward across the foot in place.

◉ A reverse pivot : is performed by keeping one foot at the place and


moving the other backward in a semicircle.

➩ Fake : you can maneuver for as shot when as defense plays close to you. To
accomplish this, fake is used.

- Fake can be made with the eyes, head, shoulder, feet, ball, total body by
pivoting, or with any combination of these.
- The dribble and pivot are also combined with fakes to maneuver the defense.
The maneuver, often called moves, do not come naturally but must be practised
and learned.

8. Offense
➢. Offensive play will vary with the defensive play used by the opponent team
throughout as single game of basketball. One type of offensive tactic is used
against one to one defense and another type against zone defense.

➢ The most common method of offense against the zone defense is to use quick
sharp passing. the major aim is to penetrate the zone-defense and facing an
opponent player out of the assigned position.

➢ The other offensive tactic commonly used is pressing ( Over loading). additional
offensive players will be assigned in as weekly defended area of the zone.

➢ Basic activities against one to one defense are the give and go and the pick and
roll. the emphasis is to screen as defensive player and then give the ball to as free
teammate.

8. Recieving a passing
➢ Recieving a ball is closely related to the speed and direction of passing, the
movements of the receivere and opponents, and what the receiver intends to do
after reception of the ball. Successful recieving depends on the accuracy and
speed of passing.

➢ When the ball is thrown to you, make your hands ready to ( relaxed) with the
fingers spread to receive it.

- Common errors in ball handling and recieving :

◉ Failure to stay relaxed.

◉ Keeping arms too stiff while catching the ball.

◉ Attempt to pass before having full control over the ball.


◉ Failure to watch the ball all the way.

9. Team play

➢ it needs team effort to win a game and good team players develop the ability
to help each other and play at their peak performance.

➢ Inorder to win basketball games and to have a successful teamq, the co-
operation of players with each other and also with their managers is very
important.
