13.1 Conversation
Mr and Mrs Hill are in Spain for the first time. Listen to their conversation
with Miss Lorca in one of the Tourist Information Offices in Barcelona.
Lorca : Good morning. Can I help you?
Mr. Hill : Yes, we’re staying a few days and then we’re visiting Madrid.
Could you give us some advice about things to do here?
Lorca : With pleasure. Let me tell you some of the things to do and then
I’ll give you some brochures and recommend some guide books
as well.
Mr. Hill : Thank you.
Lorca : You’d like to go sightseeing first. I expect. Why not have a walk
down Las Ramblas before you do anything else? You’ll get the
atmosphere of the town there. There are pavement cafes where
you can sit and watch the world go by, kiosks selling souvenirs,
news stands where you can get British and American newspaper
and magazines, and a great number of good shops, bars, and
restaurants.
Mrs. Hill : Yes, they mentioned the Ramblas at the hotel.
Lorca : If you go to the end of the Ramblas, there’s a square with a
column that commemorates Christopher Colombus. You can

170 Buku Ajar English For Tourism & Airline Services

climb up inside the monument and get a wonderful view over the
port and the city.
Mrs. Hill : What’s that big hill on the right as you look towards the harbour?
Lorca : That’s the mountain of Montjuisch.
Mrs. Hill : I see. Where is the most interesting architecture?
Lorca : Have a look at Gaudi’s Church of the Holy Family. It’s world
famous.
The building in the old quarter are very interesting, too. Most of
them date back to medieval times.
Mr. Hill : What about other amenities?
Lorca : Oh, there are very good museum, art galleries, concert halls and
so on.
Ah, excuse me, I’ll have to answer that. Why don’t you take a
guided tour? It’s the best way of getting to know the city and it’s
not at all expensive.
Mrs. Hill : That’s a good idea. Where do we go for that?
Lorca : The next bus leaves from this office in a quarter of an hour.
Mr. Hill : Fine.
Lorca : Here’s an entertainment guide with details of events in Barcelona
this
week. The brochures are on those shelves. Help yourselves.
Mr. Hill : Right, Thank you for you help.
Lorca : Not at all. Goodbye.

ESTARTIT

This popular summer resort has one of the finest sand beaches of the Costa
Brava – the Playa de Pals. Formerly a little fishing port, where the inhabitants
fished for sardine and anchovy, it has, in a few years, achieved international status
without losing its appeal.
Just off the coast lie a group of four islands known as the Medas isles and
a little farther north is the Foadada Rock. Inhabited in Roman times, these islands
later become deserted. Now you can take boat trips to them to swim, fish or simply
sunbathe.
There is little to see in Estartit itself. In fact, it is hardly more than a main
interest – Calle Sante Ana – which runs parallel to the sea and contains some good
boutiques and small souvenir shops. If you want to shop, the best day to visit
Estartit is on Thursday , which is market day.
For a small resort, Estartit has plenty of night life. For first – class evening
entertainment, often with an international floor show, it is worth climbing The Hill

14.2 Explaining Tour Itinerary
a. Sightseeing boat trip
Guide: Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. My name is Gunilla Bergman
and
I welcome you on board this boat. The sight seeing XII, which leaves shortly for
one hour trip round the old city of Stockholm. Before we start I’d like to tell you
about our route. The Old City is in fact a small island. It is not possible for us to go
all the way round it because the water to the north of it moves too fast for boat to
travel there. The reason for this fast movement is that the water to the east of the
island is the Baltic Sea. To the West, the water is fresh not salt. It is the beginning
of lake Malaren. At this point the lake water flows rapidly into the sea. Our trip
will end at a point close to the Central Rail Way Station….. As you can see we are
now moving a way from the land. The building almost next to us of the left is the
Grand Hotel and beyond that you can see the National museum which contains
older art. If you walk past that museum, over the bridge and on the island
Skeppshoimen, you can visit the museum of modern Art. Which has more recent
works. If you look over the right now, you can’t miss the Royal Palace…
We are now going to leave the Baltic sea… until we tie up at our arrival point near
the central Station. Thank you for your attention, ladies and gentlemen, and I hope
you have enjoyed your trip

14.3 Reading
Authorities in Hawaii are proposing a ban on the popular tourist activity of swimming
with dolphins off the Hawaiian coast. The dolphins have served as a magnet for
tourists over the past few decades. However, federal officials say the increasing
tourism is harmful to the dolphins because they are supposed to be resting and
socializing. The National Marine Fisheries Service of the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration proposes to prohibit swimming with, or approaching
within 50 metres of, Hawaii's spinner dolphins. That would put an end to many tour

group activities, which involve sailing alongside the creatures in a boat and snorkeling
with them.
Ann Garrett, a spokeswoman for the National Marine Fisheries Service, said she didn't
think the ban would have a big impact on the tourist trade in Hawaii. Ms Garrett said:
"We think that by identifying 50 metres as the minimum distance, there still can be a
viable tourist industry in Hawaii." Tour operators disagreed with Garrett's assessment.
Tour company owner Kevin Merrill warned: "It would be the end of legitimate dolphin
swimming. We couldn’t offer the people the quality interaction that they expect."
Dolphins typically are most active at night and sleep and relax during the day, which is
when the tourists interact with them. Garrett said the interaction disrupts the dolphins'
health and fitness.
