About The Course
 Basic knowledge of processes of soil rock
formation, the characteristics of soil and
its classification, compaction,
permeability and the process of
improving characteristics of soil.
 Also, emphasizes testing, analyzing and
presenting the data for soil classification,
compaction and permeability test.
Expected Learning Outcomes :
 Acquire basic knowledge of soil mechanics,
formation of soil and rocks in Malaysia.
 Demonstrate technical skill on soil testing
standards methods and procedures.
 Suggest appropriately method and
techniques to control geotechnical problems.
 Determine the concept of vertical stress,
effective stress, horizontal stress, pore water
pressure, change of stress and stress
distribution correctly based on Terzaghi’s
Principle.

1. Introduction to Geotechnics (2 hours)
2. Basic Characteristics of Soil (4 hours)
3. Compaction (4 hours)
4. Effective Stress Concept (4 hours)
5. Principle of Lateral Earth Pressure and
Retaining Wall (8 hours)
6. Ground Water and Permeability (4 hours)
7. Process of Improving Soil Characteristics
(4 hours)
Assessment :
 Continuous Assessment – (50%)

 Practical
 Practical Work -- 40%
 Test (minimum 2) --20%
 Other Assessment Tasks
 End of Chapter Problem (minimum 2) -- 20%
 Portfolio (minimum 1) -- 20%

 Final Examination – (50%)
