Essay: Based on what you have learned in your asynch session, what are the expectations from
our learners in a HyFlex learning environment and how can we make learning accessible for all
“Expect the unexpected”, this overused line somehow reminds me the possible anticipation of
my learners in a HyFlex learning environment. Probably they would think that through this
learning delivery modality, they would be motivated hopefully and performing well
academically compared to the modular learning in which most of them definitely feel bored and
frustrated.
A Hyflex learning environment offers onsite (synchronous) and offsite learning (synchronous)
mode. In synchronous session, a teacher will find it easy to deliver the lesson while synchronous
session in a Hyflex teaching might challenging in the sense that a learner will be given
unstructured learning experience. The teacher will now focus on how he/she delivers the lesson
online. So in my asynchronous sesson, I learned how the teacher caters the diverse needs of
learners that is accessible to all. A teacher will have to prepare lessons online that is something
accessible depending on the learner’s individual preference and circumstances. Basically you
have to consider the internet connectivity of learners and then follow the web content
instruction, you have to consider who needs accommodation? Of course you will consider the
senses of our learners. First is visual. When creating content please take note that it is visible and
consider the learners with visual impairment. You have to create a content also that is accessible
to learners with or without visual disabilities. Second is hearing. This is another thing that you
have to consider in creating content. There are some accommodations though that can be made to
help improve accessibility of it. In creating content online, make sure that the volume is high
enough when creating videos, or that you’re taking directly into a microphone when you’re
inside of meetings. The third one is Motor function. There are wide range of disabilities and
impairments related to motor functions, which definitely hinders our learner in accessing
learning resources. Motor function has a lot of impairments, and so we have to be specific to
every type of it. Some of these impairments may prevent someone from being able to write out
responses or effectively use a computer keyboard or mouse. It is important to bear in mind when
you’re creating resources, both physical and digital, and understand that certain accommodations
may be required. The fourth one is cognitive. This is another important consideration when
creating accessible learning. It is something complex but most cognitive disabilities often impact
one or more of the following, memory, attention and focus. This impairment needs to be
diagnosed but most it is undiagnosed. So all you have to is to simplify the things that you create
for their best learning outcome. The fifth one is language. This is another important thing to
consider in making learning accessible to everyone. Some considerations for making learning
more accessible in this situation include using more diagrams and images to support text. Lastly
is digital access. Most of the obstacles to accessing learning content that we’ve discussed so far
related to impairments or disabilities that someone has. This is another thing to take a look with
regards to accessibility in learning. Make sure that a teacher will consider this when creating
content. The deemed perfect solution for this is to make sure that everyone has internet access
paramount import to be considered as a teacher. Therefore a teacher should get ready on the
challenge/s of this course format and making sure that learning is truly accessible. However,
there is no perfect teacher when it comes to creating learning accessible in a digital format. What
matters most is a teacher really tried to learn on how to cater the learning of his/her diverse
learners.
