Patrick Andrews is a true hero. He was driving home after a long day of work when he
saw the car in front of him weaving from one side to another. He pulled back a bit since
he assumed it was a drunk driver and continued following it. Suddenly, the car veered
left and ran into a ditch at the side of the highway. It rolled over twice and ended up on
its roof with smoke coming from the engine. Patrick pulled over and left his flashers on
so other drivers would see his car. Then he ran across the highway and to the driver's
door. He saw a woman trying to get out of her seat belt. Since she was hanging upside
down and could have serious injuries, he had to work rapidly. He couldn't open the
door, but the window had broken, so he reached in and tried to release the seat belt. He
was getting nervous because the fire was getting bigger and approaching the driver. He
pulled back and took a deep breath and reached in again. Finally, he was able to free
her. He slowly and carefully pulled her out of the car and to the side of the highway.
Then he heard her whisper, “My baby ...” He ran back to the car and peered in the back
seat. There he saw a little baby still in her car seat. She looked fine, even though she
was upside down. She smiled at him. Quickly he released her and carried her up to her
mother. Then he saw a police car and ambulance pull up. Without a word, he walked
back to his car and drove away. It took the police days to find out who the hero was.
Patrick was awarded the Hero of the Year award by the City Council last night.
