Chichicastenango is a small town in Guatemala. It is an indigenous town located at an

altitude of 1,965 meters about 140 kilometers northwest of Guatemala City.

The best days to visit Chichicastenago are on Thursday and Sunday, which are market
days. Local vendors sell everything from food to pottery, and from traditional incense
(pom and copal) to medicinal plants. Most tourists, however, are interested in buying
the traditional embroidered textiles made by the locals; blouses and bags are the most
popular handicrafts. Carved wooden masks that are used in traditional dances are also
available.

At the heart of the town you can visit the 400-year-old Santo Tomás church which was
built on top of a pre-Columbian Mayan temple platform accessed by climbing 18 stairs,
