4. When work is done by an applied force, the object’s energy will change. In this interactive,
does work cause a change in potential energy and kinetic energy? Explain. (4 points)

Yes, the work does change kinetic energy because the work done by an applied force is
transferred as kinetic energy, whereas potential energy depends on the position in which the
force is applied, for example, when pushing up an object, the potential energy changes
negative, while pushing downwards changes into positive.

5. Assuming the starting height is 0.00 m, calculate the potential energy of the cart after it has
been elevated to 1.00 m above the starting location. Show calculations. (5 points)

Mass = 4.0 kg

Height = 1 m

G = 9.8 m/s^2

POTENTIAL ENERGY = M*G*H  = (4 kg)(1 m)(9.8 m/s^2)

POTENTIAL ENERGY = 39.2 J
