FASHION TERMINOLOGY
AVANTE- GARDE:
French term.
avant-garde describes experimental or innovative art or design, or the group of people who make them and push the
envelope in their field. It can also more generally refer to anything considered “unorthodox” or “radical.
An example of avant garde is a up-and-coming painter who is using a new, modern painting style. A group that creates or
promotes innovative ideas or techniques in a given field, especially in the arts.
HAUTE- COUTURE:
Haute couture , French for 'high sewing', 'high dressmaking') is the creation of exclusive
Target group- rich people, custom-fitted clothing.
celebrities Haute couture is high-end fashion that is constructed by hand from start to finish, made
termed as pure luxury
from high-quality, expensive, often unusual fabric and sewn with extreme attention to
detail and finished by the most experienced and capable of sewers—often using time-
consuming, hand-executed techniques.
DIFFUSION:
A diffusion line (also known as a bridge line) is a secondary line of merchandise created by a high-end fashion house or fashion
designer that retails at lower prices.
These ranges are separate from a fashion house's "signature line", or principal artistic line, that typically retail at much higher prices.
Diffusion products may be on sale alongside designers' signature line but they can also be made available at concession outlets and
certain chain stores.
The use of a diffusion line is a part of the strategy of massification where luxury brands attempt to reach a broader market in order
to increase revenue and brand recognition.
EXAMPLE :
PARENT COMAPNY- ARMANI
DIFFUSION LINES- Armani Exchange, Armani Jeans, Emporio Armani
MASS / VALUE MARKET:
The term "mass market" refers to a market for goods produced on a large scale for a significant number of end
consumers.
Traditionally, businesses reach out to the mass market with advertising messages through a variety of media
including radio, TV, newspapers and the Web
EXAMPLE: Levi Strauss and Gap, and e-retailers like Amazon.
CLASSIC :
A classic fashion is a style that lasts for several seasons, sometimes even years, and is accepted by a wide
range of people.
FAD:
a fashion style, activity, or interest that is very popular for a short period of time.
