Chapter 1

Introduction

Background of the Study

The Covid-19 pandemic has been one of the biggest

disruptions to education that the world has ever known

affecting more than 90% of the world student population.

Many of the countries turned to online based distance

education to ensure that learning never stops. However, some

826 million students (50%) kept out of classrooms by the

pandemic do not have access to a computer at home. Around

706 million students lack internet access and 56 million

live in areas not covered by mobile networks. Many countries

had to quickly find effective solutions to address this

problem. Reaching students and ensuring the continuity of

education is one of the basic concern as of this time of

pandemic.

Distance learners must balance many challenges when

studying away from their home institution, including

balancing work, family and study times. How, where, and when

a student organizes and interacts with his or her study

environment is a significant factor in student persistence

and retention. Support services provided by the home

institution, including the library, that can help students

succeed are an essential resource but capturing how, if, and

why distance students interact with these services presents

a unique challenge. Distance from the home institution means

that the distance learner's voice is often lost.

Study habits act as another variable connected with

distance learners’ performances. Study habits reflect

students’ usual act of studying and also call forth and

serve to direct the learner’s cognitive processes during

learning. Study habits includes a variety of activities:

time management, setting appropriate goals, choosing an

appropriate study environment, using appropriate note-taking

strategies, choosing main ideas, and organization (Proctor

et al., 2006)

Academic performance of students is one of the main

indicators used to evaluate the quality of education in

universities. Academic performance is a complex process that

is influenced by several factors, such as study habits.

Study habit is different individual behavior in relation to

studying and is a combination of study method and skill. In

other words, study habits include behaviors and skills that

can increase motivation and convert the study into an

effective process with high returns, which ultimately

increases the learning. This skill is also defined as any

activity that facilitates the process of learning about a

topic, solving the problems or memorizing part or all of the

presented materials. Study habits are in fact the gateway to

success and differ from person to person.

According to previous studies, good study habits

include studying in a quite place, studying daily, turning

off devices that interfere with study (such as TV and mobile

phones), taking notes of important content, having regular

rests and breaks, listening to soft music, studying based on

own learning style, and prioritizing the difficult contents.

Some of the worst study habits include procrastination,

evading the study, studying in inappropriate conditions, and

loud sound of music and television during studying.

The influence of the students' good study habits in

doing their homework, active participation in class,

managing their time, being focused, and working hard have

shown a significant positive correlation on their academic

performance (Fouche, 2017). Furthermore, Ebele (2017)

suggested that students cannot perform and improve their

academic performance without developing study habit.

We conducted this research for knowing everyone how

much students and teachers even parents struggling this

distance learning cause of this pandemic. Through this

research we want to inform everyone how affecting the

academic performance of the students in our new normal

education which is distance learning and their study habit.

Theoretical framework

This study on the awareness, implementation and impact

of Study Habit in Distance Learning and its Effect of

Academic Performance will be anchored on the theories of

Maslow;s Hierarchy of Needs, Michael Moore’s theory of

distance education, Keegan (1996) classified theories of

distance education.

Statement of the problem

This study aims to determine the different perspective

of different study habit in distance learning and its effect

of academic performance among the Grade 11 learners of Roxas

City School for Philippine Craftsmen for School Year 2021-

2022.

Specifically this study sought to answer the following

questions.

1. What is the demographic characteristics of

correspondents in terms of learning modality, educational

background, availability of learning resources, and type of

locality where they live?

2. What are the differences learning habit in distance

learning of the respondents?

3. What is the effect of different learning habit to the

academic performance of the respondents?

4. Is there a significant difference to the learning

habits in the academic performance of Grade 11 learners of

RCSPC?

Hypothesis

There is a no significant relationship in the different

learning habits in distance learning to academic performance

of Grade 11 learners of RCSPC in terms of different learning

platforms, educational background, availability of resources

and locality where they live.

Significance of the study

This study will be conducted to provide substantial

information on the level of implementation, awareness and

impact of Distance learning to the academic performance of

Grade 11 learners of Roxas City Schools for Philippine

Craftsmen for School Year 2021-2022.

Pupils/ students- The result will be used to help

learners to chose the best type of learning modalities that

have great impact to their academic performance.

Parents – the results of the study may help them assess

their child to choose the best type of learning platform.

Teachers- The result of the study can make the teachers

become aware on the different factors that would affect the

learning of the Grade 11 learners.

School Head- The result will help the School head to

implement the best learning modalities that has a great

impact to the academic performance of learners.

Scope and Delimitation of the study

This study will cover the determination of the effect

of Different types of Distance learning to the academic

Performance of Grade 11 enrolled Learners of RCSPC for

School Year 2021-2022. The primary subjects of this study

will consist of the Grade 11 students enrolled in academic

year 2021-2022. The respondents will be limited to 50

learners enrolled in Grade 11 for the school year 2021-2022

at Roxas School for Philippine Craftsmen, Division of Roxas

City.

Moreover, the participants will be purposely selected

by referring to their learning modality and academic

records. The respondents will be marked as Modular learners,

Blended Learners and Online Modality Learners.

Definition of terms

Distance Learning Modalities- Distance learning is a

learning method where the teacher and student are separated

geographically. There is no interaction between students,

and little face-to-face interaction between students and

their teachers. In a distance learning set up, students may

get their learning materials via snail mail, e-mail, or the

internet. Learning assessments can be in the form of

written exams or assignments, performance tasks, or

portfolios. Students can also ask for support through the

telephone, snail mail, e-mail, or instant messaging

applications used by their teachers.

Study habit- is it important that you plan when you're

going to study, it's important you create a consistent,

daily study routine. When you study at the same time each

day and each week, you're studying will become a regular

part of your life.

Academic performance- academic achievement or academic

performance is the extent to which a student, teacher or

institution has attained their short or long –term

educational goals. Completion of educational benchmarks such

as secondary school diplomas and bachelor’s degree represent

academic achievement.

Modalities learning- This refers to a learning delivery

modality where learning takes place between the teacher and

the learners who are geographically remote from each other

during instruction.
