It is highly corrosive in nature. General Characteristi Components Weight % Nitric Acie 560% ae z | CONTROLLED Water Balance | copys. * q.. Hazards and Potential Health Effects: | 90 NOT OUPLiCATE Nitric acid is corrosive and can cause severe bums to all parts of the body. Its vapors are corrosive to the respiratory tract and may cause pulmonary edema which could prove fatal. Precautions: Avoid breathing, avoid ingestion, avoid contact with eyes, use under adequate ventilation Overexposure Conditions: Acute: effects predominate and their severity is such that significant repeated or prolonged exposure is unlikely Chronic: Repeated exposure to high levels produces adverse effecis on lung and teeth Inhalation: Fumes are corrosive to the respiratory tract and will cause severe coughing, sore thro: and labored breathing. Fluid buildup on the lung (pulmonary edema) may occur up to 48 hours ‘exposure and could prove fata ‘Skin Contact: Liquid splashes may produce severe burns to skin as nitric acid is highly corrosive to all parts of the body. Eye Contact: Liquid splashes may produce severe burns to skin and may cause serious damage toceyes. Ingestion: Wil immediately cause damage to the gastro-intestinal tract. Decomposition: Decomposition products include nitrogen oxides and hydrogen. Environment: Nitric acid is harmful to aquatic ie Other: Not classed as oxidizing agent. Can display oxidizing properties and react with combustiole materials. May react violently with reducing agents, metals and a number of other substances. First Aid: Speedy response is essential. Use foam to blanket vapor cloud from an upwind position till condition is, under control Water curtain should be formed in the downwind area of HNO; vapors to prevent HNO; vapor ‘exposure to people. Use hydrants in such a way tht hydrants located exactly in the downwind direction are not used for water curtain formation, Emergency Response Team (ERT) must have available with them at least 10 escape masks with NOx cartridges (Blue color) for evacuation of any personnel trapped in heavy cloud of acid vapors. If downwind areas are operating units then those operating units must be shut down as per procedure so that operating staff may leave the area safely. Personnel, involved in shut down of downwind operating areas being affected by toxic acid vapor, should wear SCBA while conducting shut down operations till evacuation to safe area so that acid vapor may not affect them. Evacuation of effected colony area should be carried out if wind direction is from acid Storage Tank towards the Housing Colony. Market mosque loud speakers should be used to inform people about the emergency in addition to the emergency siren for level-2 emergency. Appropriate Spill Control Resources: = Foam, water and dry powder. Use a water spray to cool fire-exposed containers and structures, Specific hazards if the product is involved in a Fire: Not combustible, but having oxidizing properties it may react with many combustible ‘materials causing Fires and releasing toxic fumes (nitrogen oxides). ‘May explode on contact with a powerful reducing agent. Reacts with most common metals to liberate hydrogen which can form explosive mixtures with air ° Toxic fumes (oxides of nitrogen) may be given off. Special Fire Fighting protection: Wear self-contained breathing apparatus and full protective clothing. Other Information: Collect large amounts of contaminated extinguishing water separately, do not allow reaching sewerage or effluent systems. Accidental Release Measures: Personal protection: Put on protective equipment before entering danger area - Ventilate area of spill or leak to disperse vapors. Environmental protection: - Take care to avoid the contamination of watercourses and drains.
