1
2. Project Statement
According to our project as we have to design the data center for Panadox, a health care
company serving more than 10 million patients. The information generated from healthcare
are in electronic health record (EHRs) like emails, messages, test result etc. In order to store
it safely and securely Panadox is requiring a data center to manage it properly.
For designing the data center for storing information safely we have planned to design
HIPPAs security rule which deals with PHI (Protected Health Information). It helps to
maintain the privacy and security of patient’s information. The space is typically measured
in kilowatts (kW), according to the information provided to us the health care need 3,000
sq. km of space to manage their patient’s information. The data center is unlikely to be
affected by natural disasters like flood, earthquake etc. and it situated in safe area away
from city, airports and railways. It is located in cool temperature area for better operation of
data center. Unirrupted power supply is provided, redundant cable services with high
bandwidth. Data center has redundant features, such as extra power generators and backup
data. It has efficient performance with power, cooling maintenance and redundant data
service. Our design is based on Tier-4 architecture.

3. Problem Statement
According to requirement of our clients Panadox, a health care company in Malaysia
serving more than 10 million patients. Panadox provides a Customer Relationship
Management (CRM) platform for medical practice and hospitals allowing practitioners to
manage communications in one inbox, streamline physician relationships, drive
collaboration between partners, and engage patients all integrated with a medical practices
existing electronic health record (EHR). To maintain their highest level of services we are
designing the comfortable data center.

4. Limitation and Delimitation
.1. Limitation

To maintain the depending cost, complex deployments, reliability and uptime. There are
some major challenges of Data Center Design.

Maintaining Availability and Uptime:

It is one of the major challenges faced by data center Company to provide the availability
and uptime of data center. It can prove challenges when there is unplanned downtime
trouble shooting and attempting to map the power chain. It becomes difficult to provide
availability to the clients whenever they required.

Managing Energy Usage & Costs

It is difficult to maintain the energy level and usages in data center. Data center requires
continuous energy to perform in any case if the power is cut off or there is fluctuation in
energy the data center don’t works. We are facing this as the major problem to main
continuous power energy and it cost high for maintain it continuous. So maintaining a
smooth and same energy level is one of the difficult task.[Pau14]

Wiring:

While installing the wring system in data center standard is needed to be maintain. We have
to take care of rodents to protect wire from that. All the cable management should be done,
copper wire ducts, ladder and fiber ducting should be maintaining for better performance.
Proper management of wiring difficult to manage as we have to fix all the connection
points, it performance quality because it should be of good quality for high speed.
.2. Delimitation
Natural Disaster Backup Recovery
As we have selected Tier-4 architecture as a data center design it has heighted security and
natural disaster protection like from flood, earthquake, and hurricane. The Tier 4 standard
ensures that the datacenter provides the highest level of security, integrity and redundancy
available in the datacenter solutions industry. It has several security and has backup system
from which recovery can be done easily.

3
Physical Security
There are no of physical security measures maintain in our datacenter design. There are fire
security which is maintained and controlled by DCIM software. It automate every system
of data center. CCTV cameras are installed for better security, NOC room for monitoring
performance and high speed of data center.

5. Literature Review
Datacenters consumed 2% of all electricity usage in 2010 in the U.S [Ash14]. Utility is a
primary source that provides electricity for data centers. Diesel and natural gas generators
are employed as emergency sources during a utility power outage.
Datacenter contains a large number of components for computing, storage, and networking,
together with an infrastructure to distribute power and provide cooling. The data center
loads are divided into inflexible and flexible load. The datacenters contains large number of
inflexible loads. A survey done by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory presents the
average load contribution of different component in data center and the average load
breakdown for a data center are as follows: Server - 46%, Cooling - 31%, UPS - 8%,
Lighting - 4% and other miscellaneous - 11% [San15].
According to director of Tuangru (Company that develops data center infrastructure
management software), Many healthcare enterprises have adopted a hybrid IT infrastructure
made up of both physical data centers and the public cloud.[Raj18]
According to a report of DPR Construction, “The Convergence of Healthcare and IT,”
mechanical and electrical systems account for more than two-thirds of a data center’s cost,
therefore the space is typically measured in terms of kilowatts (kW) of power available for
computing equipment. A large healthcare organization need a data center with the capacity
to handle more than 5,000 kW, while a midsize provider need between 1,000 to 4,000 kW
[Ann14].
The main purpose of this research paper is to build green data center energy efficient which
is important for global sustainable transition. It aim is to create energy efficient data center
heading towards greenery and sustainable environment. According to the research it is
found that industry of data center in US is increasing simultaneously for data processing
and storage level. During past five years, increasing demands for computer resources has

4
lead significant growth in the number of data center servers, along with estimated doubling
the energy used by the server and power and cooling technologies inside the data center.
Because of the potential for rapid growth in direct energy uses by the servers and data
centers is significant, estimated to be 61 billion kilowatts-hours (kWh) in 2006 the total cost
for energy about $4.5 billion. The energy consumed is more than by the nation.
To reduce the energy uses by data center and make it green and energy efficient. A
corresponding research goal is the development of a Decision Support System (DSS)
that will allow data center professionals to make better management decisions for
server and other information technology (IT) systems while balancing energy efficiency
with various functionality demands. (Dr. Aparna S. Varde, 2015)

6. Design
.1. Logical Design

Data center has some design values which are the foundation for the data center i.e. are:

 Simplicity
 Flexibility
 Scalability

Simplicity: A data center design must be simple and easier to understand which is easily
manageable. If the data center is simple than it became easy to trace out the problems if
occur and can be fixed easily and fast.

Flexibility: The data center design must be flexible because its need to be change time to
time if system need upgrade or clients demands for some addition. If data center design is
flexible, then can be upgraded according to the changes of technologies in market and can
be successful for long- term design.

Scalability: Data center design environment effects how to manage scaling of

infrastructure which supports increasing data center. It does not matter how fast market is
growing, it is need to grow quickly when ever needed. It should be equally for 500 people
as well as for 5000 people.

Data Center Tires:

To exist standard and to evaluate the quality and reliability of data center there are four tiers
ranking system for determining the reliability of data center. The four tiers of data center
have their own standard for uptime and down time.

Figure 1: Pyramid of different tier level

6
Tier 1 Data Center

Tire 1 data center is generally required for small business which is non- redundant
components.

 99.671% Uptime
 no redundancy
 28.8 Hours of downtime per year.

Tier 2 Data center

Tier 2 data center is utilized by small and medium size business which have certain amount
of data.

 99.749% Uptime
 Partial redundancy in power and cooling
 Experience 22 hours of downtime per year

Tier 3 Data Center:

It is utilized by large business in which data level is high to maintain.

 99.982% uptime (Tier 3 uptime)

 No more than 1.6 hours of downtime per year
 N+1 fault tolerant providing at least 72-hour power outage protection

Tier 4 Data Center:

It is typically used by server enterprise and corporations which have huge amount of data to
maintain and manage.

 99.995% uptime per year (Tier 4 uptime)

 2N+1 fully redundant infrastructure (the main difference between tier 3 and tier 4
data centers)
 96-hour power outage protection
 26.3 minutes of annual downtime.[Col18]

7
According to the client information of Panadox, which is a health care company in
Malaysia serving more than 10 billion of patients. So it has huge no of data to maintain. To
maintain the highest level of service to customers and their patient’s data who have hired
our company to maintain their data center.

To maintain their data Tier 4 data center is best for them. Tier 4 data center is good for them
because the uptime rate is high, supports 100% load for all components, 96- hour power
outage, 26.3 minutes of annual downtime and has 2N+1 redundant infrastructure which
flexible and scalable. It can easily be extendable whenever their data is increased or wants
to add some new features. The figure clearly shows the data center design for tier 4.

[col18]

8
.2. Physical Design
.2.1. Components of Data Center
In order to establish and design data center and to secure the information different
technology and hardware such as computing units, networking equipment, data storage
resources are required. Some of the major components are required to meet the standard of
data center they are follows.
Hardware Components
Hardware components includes functional and non-functional hardware devices and
equipment necessary for the operations of a data center. Computing units, data storage
devices and other hardware deployed by customers or provided as a service by the data
center [Joh17].
Racks
All the hardware components are mounted into racks that maximize the use of space in the
facility. It organizes equipment like servers, network switches and all other electronics for
making efficient use of space, proper airflow and standardized resources [Sah17]. Racks
can be stretched towards the ceiling leaving just enough room for overhead cable systems,
cooling and airflow. Rack is the major component of data center which contains storage
equipment’s. It contains direct cooling principle with water cooled server rack.

Figure 3: Server Rack

Power
Power is the most important detail of a data center. All the web hosting servers and
colocation equipment requires power to run automatic. There are no of power suppling UPS
are required to main the performance of data center. Automatic UPS are used as power
connection suppose if the power of one UPS is down automatic it regulate to another one.

9
Uninterruptible power source systems provides protection from short power outages and
unstable power supply such as surges.
Cooling
In datacenter, Cooling allows colocation servers, networking gear and other general web
hosting equipment to function properly without overheating. In order to improve the
performance of data center as hot air decreases its performance, raised floor are used which
is arranged with cold aisle /hot aisle principle. All the cables are arranged in a raised floor
which contribute to improve air conditioning.

Figure 4: Cooling Techniques

Cabling
AC/DC power, ground, copper and fiber optic are the main types of network cabling used
in data centers. All the cables are connected in each machine in a data center to power,
networks, devices and resources. Cables are hanged in both ceilings as well as they are
raised in the floor. Cabling in data center may be either structured or unstructured. We have
installed structured cabling which has predefined points and pathways. The structured
cabling is well arranged, organized and label.

[C2G18]

Figure 5: Cabling

10
Environment Control
For the proper operation of Data Center we have to maintain right equilibrium of its
environmental conditions. The key is maintaining optimal conditions so that the equipment
can operate at the best possible conditions and keeping the facilities controlled through
environmental control systems. Although the equipment can operate within a wide range of
temperatures, but keeping the temperature around 22 degrees Celsius provides several
advantages like better system reliability and a small security margin in case of
environmental control system failure. To guarantee proper system operation, environmental
relative humidity should be between 45% and 50%. [Ges16].
Security
Data centers function with a high level of security needs. A data center maintains 24/7/365
security staff, closed loop surveillance cameras, finger print access and visitor log books.
Moreover, data center security is a matter of physical security, i.e. being out of harm’s way.
Physical data center security means building a data center outside of noted flood zones,
outside of fault lines and outside of noted tornado alleys/hurricane paths.

Fire Protection
Datacenters requires fire protection such as smoke detectors and a fire sprinkler system.
Fire protection is used to protect against fire destroying Data Centre and the equipment that
is installed. Passive systems such as fire-resistant barriers may also be used. [Joh16]
Raised Floor
In our design we have implemented raised floor design for managing structured cabling and
cooling system. It provide flexible in network and electrical cabling and also increases the
efficiency of air conditioning.
[dat12]

Figure 6: Raised
.3. Business Goals
Without high performance data center it become difficult for the Company to run their
fundamental business operation. As we all know every company required uninterrupted IT
services to reach their mission and goals. The data center has to provide service level to
meet organization operation level.

Colocation Services:
Our company has designed datacenter location faraway form city, airports and railways
tracks which protects data center from redundancy. It is located in safe place which is not
effected by natural disaster like earthquake, hurricanes, floods etc. and there is fast recovery
system if there is any loss occur due to disaster.
Infrastructure Services:

The products of our data center are used to run system efficiently and all the equipment’s
meet the specific requirements according to environment needs with right configuration.
The infrastructure solution like server racks, network racks, wiring etc. Our data center has
intelligent system, equipment’s and virtualization services to meet high density of company
operation.
6.4. Technical Goals
It is difficult to maintain the upgraded technologies every time due to which it optimizes the
performance. We have maintain all the components of data center which is not changes
fluently. We have the data center components of high performance which meets the client
needs. All the components meets the standard of data center which provide efficient and
effective performance. We have used fiber optics and Ethernet as network channel. Raised
floor for high performance and cooling system.

12
7. Design Analysis
After analyzing the requirement of health care our team have finalize the design of data
center and its component. The components are:
 42U universal rack

15
.1. Green Computing in Data Centre
According to our design is developed on the basis of green computing data center which is
feasible to use with effecting environment. Our design a repository for the storage,
management, and dissemination of data in which the mechanical, lighting, electrical and
computer systems are designed for maximum energy efficiency and minimum
environmental impact. The construction and operation of a green data center includes
advanced technologies and strategies.

Cooling Capability

For cooling capability most of the data center use large no of ACs which generates harmful
gases from which environment gets effected. It emits 20% to 60% of harmful gases which
pollute the environment around the data center. Thus to protect environment we design
Green environment data center. Free or natural air cooling is used for datacenter facilities
rather than running power-hungry mechanical refrigeration or air-conditioning units. Using
mechanical cooling only when the outside air temperatures become too high to cool
datacenters is an effective strategy to make datacenters green. Our data center is located at
cool region which have 27°C minimum temperature. And to minimize the mechanical
cooling our design consist of air ventilators.

Energy Efficiency
There are some ways that are implemented in our design to maintain the energy efficient
level they are:
i. Reduce the IT load:
In our design for reducing IT loads we have include server “virtualization” (which
allows us to run more than one workload on a single server), consolidating lightly used
servers and removing unused servers, smarter data storage, and buying more energy-
efficient equipment, such as Energy Star qualified servers.
ii. Manage airflow:
In order of airflow management we have implemented strategies involve orienting
server racks and enclosing them to reduce the mixing of cold supply air and hot
exhaust air, using variable speed fan drives in AC units, and deploying devices to
direct cold air to where it’s needed the most.
iii. Control temperatures and humidity levels more efficiently.
Because high temperatures and either damp or excessively dry conditions can harm
sensitive data center equipment, temperature and humidity levels must be managed.
Additionally, there are new, vastly more efficient ways to humidify air than the old

16
standby of producing steam. Another strategy for reducing cooling costs includes
deploying “economizers,” which take advantage of lower outside temperatures
whenever possible to avoid having to mechanically cool air.[Wal15]

.2. Technologies and Techniques to Promote Green Computing in Data

Center

1. Datacenter infrastructure management:

Our expert team has designed data center based on Data Center Infrastructure
Management (DICM) it is a technologies which make the data center energy-efficient
and green. Datacenter infrastructure management brings together standalone functions
such as datacenter design, asset discovery, systems management functions, capacity
planning and energy management to provide a holistic view of the datacenter, ranging
from the rack or cabinet level to the cooling infrastructure and energy utilization.
[Arc18]

2. On-site wind generation or use of renewable energy:

As a renewable energy we have managed solar energy and wind energy which is cost
effective and green energy. Wind energy can help datacenter managers meet
environmental requirements, while also saving the business money on electricity
costs.

3. Cloud computing:

Cloud computing can help enterprises in their green IT efforts, since a computing
cloud offers higher CPU utilization. When one organization is not experiencing a
load, its spare resources are used by another one that needs it. However, 100%
efficiency is a long way off. “Cloud computing, mainly public cloud, has a lot of
promise for bringing a massive change in resource efficiency, but we are nowhere
near there yet”.[Arc181]

17
.3. Security Measures for Data center
Some security measures are required to protect data center from damaging and loss of data:
Limiting Entry points:
There should only one main entrance and back entrance for loading dock which helps to
protect and no one can easily get access to the data center.
Using plenty of security cameras:
Surveillance cameras should be installed around the area of data center building. At all the
entrance and exit door of the building. Motion detection cameras, light detection camera
which can record digital footage.
Plan to secure air handling:
Data center should be designed in such a way through air can easily regulate. Data center
building should include ventilating and air-conditioning systems that can be set to
recirculate the air properly in order to maintain cool temperature.
Use two- factor authentication:
In order to maintain security inside the data center we are using biometric identification in
sensitive areas of data centers. Fingerprint scanners and access cards are used for entrance.

18
8. Data Center Design Deployment
As recommendation for design deployment of data center increase number of switching
platforms, appliance and server utilization. In order to increase the better performance of
data center. The mid-sized organization data center is an ideal location Ethernet outbound
management with network as equipment and interconnect fiber optics. Appling platform
specific configuration.

9. Future Scope
The data center design has future scope like security measures can be increased based on
the importance of data of clients. Level of security can include encryption, integrity and
storage of data. There can be also be developed cloud computing services in our design a
secure environment for cloud computing services that need to be focused on cloud
computing infrastructure. These new servers will have effectively tens of terabytes of
DRAM and all database systems will move to the in-memory model as a result. There will
be growing space for cloud computing.[Jim18]

10. Project Management

Figure 8: Gantt chart for project management

19
Conclusion
Tamanix data center focuses on the providing quality services to its clients Panadox. It
provides all the services required for installation of data center with different physical
security. At first we are having problem for designing data center. Later on after team
discussion we are able to solve he required problem. We have included different services
for data center installation and security measures which protects data center from different
threats like fire, disaster and loss of data. We have also maintained the green computing
data center design which does not impact on environment. Our data center has good design
with all required component information for its installation. The assignments boost our
knowledge about data center and helps to understand clearly the different terms of it.
