Earthquake rocks New Zealand Two powerful earthquakes rocked Wellington in New Zealand yesterday. The
first reached a magnitude of 6.5 followed by a 5.7 magnitude aftershock. Fortunately, no buildings were
damaged and no one was seriously injured. Mary Turner, a part-time chef at a restaurant in the city center said
she had run for cover when she felt the tremors. ‘We’ve been expecting another earthquake for a while now,
but I didn’t think it was going to be as big as it was. I’m just glad no one was hurt.’ Power cuts were reported
and there were many disruptions to transport services. People in the areas affected reported windows shaking
and buildings swaying. The earthquake happened during normal office hours and emergency services
evacuated people who were working at the time. The city council advised people to be prepared for delays due
to heavy traffic on the roads. Snow Disrupts Airports Passengers hoping to travel to destinations around the
world today were left disappointed when hundreds of flights were cancelled or delayed because of the snow
storm. Heavy snow hit areas in and around London leaving chaos at the city’s airports. Airlines advised
passengers to check if their flights were delayed or cancelled before setting off to the airport. Many travelers
have been waiting for hours for news about whether they would fly while others decided to just head home.
David Simpson, a traveler who was planning to take a weekend break and go sightseeing in Paris, said he was
annoyed by the lack of information at the airport. ‘We’ve been standing here for about six hours now and no
one’s telling us what’s going on. The airport staff here are so disorganized. It’s a mess!’ The weather center
said heavier snow was due over the weekend with up to 20cm in some areas.
