1.4 Statutory Requirements

The design of the civil, Structure will comply with the requirements of the following:

o National Building Code.

o Local Building Regulations.

o Bureau of Indian standard codes.

o International codes as applicable.

o Any other regulation as advised by the client.

1.5 Design Philosophy

1.5.1 Composite steel structure

o The structure proposed for Executive, commercial buildingis composed of RCC and structural
o steel only.
o Construction with structural beams placed. The core walls around lifts and periphery walls at few locations are of concrete to resist lateral forces.
o Basement slabs shall be RCC conventional beam slab arrangement

54
Volume 6 –Structure Design Basis Report
SDMC, New Delhi

o The Structural design of the proposed project is based on Indian Standard Codes.

o It is analyzed for Dead, Live, Wind and Seismic Load conditions taking into relevant load – Combinations recommended by the codes.
o The Vertical Loads including the dead and super imposed loads and the Lateral loads due to wind and seismic forces are transferred to the soil through proposed structural steel composite frame, Core Walls
and footings. Footings/Foundations are sized with consideration to the safe bearing capacity of soil at the level of transfer of load recommended by specialist soil investigation consultants as the case may be.
Foundations, Retaining wall, STP, Sump &OHT were considered withconcrete.

The following options were worked in order to achieve the structural framing system for the project:
• Option I – Structure with concrete works only
• Option IIA – Structural steel with Colum/Shear wall using jump from shuttering system

• Option IIB – Structural steel with composite Colum/Shear wall using normal shuttering system

In these options further, various structural framings like with and without bracings, tapered beams and straight beams for floors, core with RCC and Steel have been explored in concept design stage.

Review of structural systems * finalized option:

“Structural steel with column/shear wall using jump from shuttering is found suitable out of all above options. This option had advantage in achieving desired stability of the structure with optimum steel consumption
and at minimum required time”. (Study attached at Annexure- I)
Substructure is conventional beam slaband above ground floor Metal deck sheet RCC columns &shear wall.

1.5.2 Importance of International codes for Design of Composite Structures: (few observations)

a) Limitations of IS codes regarding Composite structures design:

IS: 11384 – 1985, gives no reference to profiled deck slab and partial shear connection. Effect of shape of deck on shear connection is not elaborated.

b) Difference between IS code and Euro Code on Composite Column Design:

1. European code had buckling curves to be used for composite column design.
2. Same buckling curves are applicable for built-up sections.
3. The steel concrete composite column design in INSTAG is discussed as perEuro code4. Indian codes are not discussing regarding the same in detail.

c) Difference between IS code and Euro code on Composite Beam Design:

1. Euro code is directing to check for partial composite action of beam and full composite action of beam. However Indian code is only directing to check for only full composite beam action.
2. Vibration check is directed in EURO code whereas Indian code is silent on the same.
3. Kt and K mod values for shear capacity are not discussed in Indian codes in detail.

d) Cracking of concrete

The profiled deck sheeting protects the lower surface of the slab. Cracking will occur in the top surface where the slab is continuous over a supporting beam in the hogging moment regions. Crack width will be
wider over the supports if each span of the slab is designed as simply supported, rather than continuous, and if the spans are propped during construction To counter cracking, longitudinal reinforcement should
be provided above internal supports. The minimum recommended amounts are as 0.2% of the area of concrete above the sheeting, for un-propped construction, and 0.4% if propping is used. (According to Euro
code 4). If the environment is corrosive, the slabs should be designed as continuous, with cracking controlled by providing additional reinforcement and ensuring that the concrete cover for reinforcement is
suitably enhanced.
e) IS: 11384-1985 has suggested a modular ratio of 15 for live load and 30 for dead load, for elastic analysis of section. It is to be noted that a higher value of modular ratio for dead load takes into account the
larger creep strain of concrete for sustained loading. In EC 4 the elastic modulus of concrete for long-term loads is taken as one-third of the short-term value and for normal weight concrete, the modular ratio is
taken as 6.5 for short term loading and 20 for long term loading.
f) Non availability of procedure for design of continuous secondary composite beams.
g) Serviceability: IS: 11384-1985 limits the maximum deflection of the composite beam to λ/325. The total elastic stress in concrete is limited to (f ) / 3 while for steel, considering different stages of construction ,
ck cu
the elastic stress is limited to
0.87 f . we can observe here mistakes made in the Code as the same limits are applied for steel
y
in determining the ultimate resistance of the cross section. Since EC4 gives explicit guidance for checking serviceability Limit State, The same shall be considered as per below method described.

h) Deflection:

The IS 456: 2000 indicates a stringent deflection limitation of l/350 which may be unrealistic For un-propped construction. The Euro code gives limitations of l/180 or 20 mm
Whichever is less. It may be worthwhile to limit span to depth ratio in the range of 25 to 35 for the composite condition, the former being adopted for simply supported slabs and The later for continuous slabs. The
deflection of the composite slabs is influenced by the Slip-taking place between sheeting and concrete.

Insufficient data for calculating transverse reinforcement calculations as enclosed below:

1.5.3. Design Life

The design life of the building is assumed 50 years as per IS code recommendation satisfying for the criteria of environmental conditions. This requirement is applicable only for concrete works and not applicable
to replaceable finishing materials, water proofing membrane and thermal insulations (if any). Hence periodic maintenance / refurbishment is required for all replaceable material for longer life.

1.5.4 Liquid retaining structures

Following are the design considerations for the liquid retaining structures as per IS 3370 Part-2 (2009)

• Crack width- The maximum calculated surface width of cracks for direct tension and flexure or restrained temperature and moisture effects shall not exceed 0.2mm with specified cover and for STP it shall be
less than0.1mm.
• Strength
• Deflection and is designed based on the above criteria by limit state method.

1.5.5 Vendors Design Work

All connection design and detailing of steel frame interface with Façade and Parasol etc., needs to be developed by approved vendors. In due course the m ember forces for connection design as inputs shall be
furnished by TPCL to develop such details and shall be approved by TPCL.

2. CODES AND STANDARDS:

Bureau of Indian Standards, based on the past seismic history, grouped the country into four seismic zones, viz. Zone-II, -III, -IV and –V. Of these, Zone V is the most seismically active region, while zone II is the
least. The Modified Marcella (MM) intensity, which measures the impact of the earthquakes on the surface of the earth, broadly associated with various zones, is asfollows.

Seismic Zone Intensity on MM scale

ZONE INTENSISTY
S
II (Low intensity zone) VI (or less)

III (Moderate intensity zone) VII

IV (Severe intensity zone) VIII

V (Very severe intensity zone) IX (and above)

Since Delhi is in zone IV (Severe intensity zone), Zone co-efficient is considered 0.24 for design.

It is generally recognized that absolute sway is not a perceivable parameter; however limiting sway is used to provide a reasonable level of stiffness and in order to limit damage to non-structural elements as well as limit
size of curtain wall joints, etc.
Generally tall building lateral load resisting systems are sized on the basis of limiting overall lateral sways to limits of approximately Overall Height/500 under the 50 year return Period wind loads.

Dynamic wind analysis check as per IS 875 part III clause 7.1:

Detailed procedure and preliminary gust coefficients for the wind forces is enclosed below.
Flexible slender structures and structural elements shall be investigated to ascertain the importance of wind induced oscillations or excitations along and across the direction ofwind. In general, the following
guidelines may be used for examining the problems of wind induced oscillations:
a) Buildings and closed structures with a height to minimum lateral dimension ratio of more than about5.0.
b) Buildings and closed structures with natural frequency in the first mode less than 1.0Hz.
Any building or structure which satisfies either of the above two criteria shall be examined for dynamic effects of wind. Dynamic wind analysis shall be done for the building.

4.5 Temperature Loads:

The effect of temperature will be considered wherever applicable in accordance with relevant Indian codes. The coefficient for thermal expansion and contraction will be in accordance with IS: 456 and IS: 800 for

6.9 Expansion & Construction Joints:

Expansion joints are recommended when structure exceeds 45m length. The width of the joints is being calculated as per IS-1893-2016, clause7.11.3.
However even though the length of building this project is more than 45m, the expansion joints are not provided but thermal analysis shall be carried out to ascertain their effect and accordingly the design shall
be carried out
Construction joints will be planned with the coordination of construction agencies.

6.10 Excavation Methodology

 Slush formed by any water accumulation should be removed and refilled by lean concrete.
 If water accumulates in the foundation trenches, dewatering should be done by pumping out water from a level lower than the foundation level to maintain downward flow ofwater.
 Earth retention if required depending on the Geological Report shall be provided.

7. GEOTECHNICAL REPORT

The ground water table at this site is observed at 5.30 m to 6.50 m (Approx) depth below existing road level. This ground water table will further rise up to existing road level during rainy season depending upon heavy rain fall.
The
project site is situated very close to Yamuna flood plain in which sub soil water table rises every year up to road level due to flood in yamuna.

Criteria for providing Web openings in composite Beams:

86
Volume 6 –Structure Design Basis Report
SDMC, New Delhi

The following points to be considered while creating web openings in composite Beams:

The hole should be centrally placed in the web and eccentricity of the opening is avoided as far as possible.
Unstiffened openings are not always appropriate, unless they are located in low shear and low bending moment regions.
Web opening should be away from the support by at least twice the beam depth, Dor
10% of the span ( ), whichever is greater

The best location for the opening is within the middle third of thespian.

Clear Spacing between the openings should not be less than beam depth,D.

The best location for opening is where the shear force is the lowest.

The diameter of circular openings is generally restricted to0.5D.

Depth of rectangular openings should not be greater than 0.5D and the length not greater than 1.5D for un-stiffened openings. The clear spacing between such opening should be at least equal the longer
dimension of the opening.
The depth of the rectangular openings should not be greater than 0.6D and the length not greater than 2D for stiffened openings. The above rule regarding spacing applies.

Corners of rectangular openings should be rounded

Point loads should not be applied at less than D from side of the adjacent opening.

If stiffeners are provided at the openings, the length of the welds should be sufficient to develop the full strength of the stiffener. Various types of stiffeners are shown in Fig.2(c).

If the above rules are followed, the additional deflection due to each opening may be taken as 3% of the mid-span deflection of the beam without the opening.

Annexure I :

1. STEEL STRUCTURE:

The costing is based on 2 options and drawings are enclosed as annexure for ready reference.

Being a large span and large height structure it shall be construction friendly to do the structure in steel due to following benefits:

Offsite fabrication of steel leads to faster construction

The depth of steel structure is 0.4 m viz-a-viz required depth of around 0.75 m for RCC beams. This shall increase the overall false ceiling height for steel
structure option.

Fast Construction

 Better earthquake performance

 Lesser manpower at site.

87
Volume 6 –Structure Design Basis Report

Note:

a) All taxes are included in these rates.

b) In structure steel work we have considered deck sheet.
c) Only slab are considered in this compression.
d) All options detail as per annexure attached.

Total builtup area above ground – 696253.2 sq.ft 696253.2 sqft/-

Increased cost of steel structure - 6.9 Cr

Cost of fire proofing of steel structure – 6.0 Cr

Total increased cost – 12.9 Cr.

5. COST BENEFIT ANALYSIS:

For Structural steel with column/shear wall using jumpform shuttering

There is a saving in time in Steel structure w.r.t. Concrete structure of 12 month(Attached sheet as annexure)

The rental value @ 50/- per sft per month = 50.9 Cr. (for 12 months) Hence the net saving is = (50.9-(8.7+6)) = 36.2 Cr.

For Structural steel with composite column/shear wall using normal shutteirng
There is a saving in time in Steel structure w.r.t. Concrete structure of 12 month(Attached sheet as annexure)

The rental value @ 50/- per sft per month = 50.9 Cr. (for 12 months) Hence the net saving is = (50.9-(9.2+6)) = 35.7 Cr.

Hence it is suggest to built the tower with steel structure with Composite column/shear wall only.
