Exam Guidelines
[Failure to follow these guidelines and instructions will result in loss of marks]

Final Exam:
• Nature: Open-book, take-home; inclusive of all readings and class discussions.
• Duration: 40 hours; you will be given the exam at 8AM on the 18th of December and will have to
submit it by 12AM on the 20th of December.
• Structure:
1. 6 analytical, essay-type questions, out of which you must attempt any 2;
2. Answers should be no longer than 750-800 words maximum; there will be penalties for
exceeding the word-limit: 5% for every additional 150 words;
3. No external research is allowed; only class readings and class-notes are allowed.
• Total Marks: 30
• Percentage of Grade: 30%
• Grading Criteria:
1. Analytical, critical and reflective thinking;
2. Ability to write clearly and in simple language;
3. Ability to draw from the readings and class discussions;
4. Ability to form and articulate your own opinions.
• Formatting Guidelines:
1. Garamond font, 12-point;
2. 1.5 spacing;
3. No indents; except for bibliographies;
4. MLA Format, including in-text citations;
5. Submit your file as a PDF.
• Plagiarism: You are required to acquire plagiarism reports for your essays from the library and
submit them in the One Drive here.
• Late Submissions: For all late submissions, there will be an incremental 10% reduction in marks
based on the number of hours within which the final is submitted after the deadline. For example:
anyone submitting their final within the hour right after the deadline will be losing 10% of their
marks. Irrespective of whether you submit it at 12:05AM or 12:59AM, the 10% penalty will apply.
Similarly, anyone submitting their final any time within the second hour of the deadline (1AM or any
point within it) will lose 20% of their marks; submitting any time within the third hour after the
deadline will incur a penalty of 30%, so on, and so forth.
• Extensions and Accommodations: Only OSA Petitions will be accepted.
Final Exam Questions

Pick and answer any TWO questions out of the following list. Every answer must refer to or cite at
least one or two texts studied in the course, and each answer must not be less than but no longer
than 750-800 words (citations will not count towards it). Please mention you word-count at the end
of each answer.

1. What were some of the different meanings of Pakistan among different groups before and after its
creation? Think critically about this question and bring together the insights offered by various texts
in the course.
2. What do state narratives of the Partition lack regarding its experience and memory which we
otherwise find in literature and oral histories? Why do these silences exist in state narratives?
3. What does the reading of different perspectives on certain events in Pakistan’s history enable us to
understand about the country? Pick one event and illustrate a) the narrative you knew about it before,
b) what you learnt about it in this course, and c) what that learning has allowed you to understand
about Pakistan and its past.
4. What were Bengali aspirations from the idea of Pakistan and do you see any link between them and
the Bengali nationalist movement which culminated in 1971?
5. According to Ayesha Jalal, what were some of the fundamental and major challenges Pakistan faced
after its emergence and how were they dealt with? What was their institutional impact on the
formation and character of the Pakistani state?
6. Pick a historical moment we’ve studied and demonstrate its impact on Pakistan’s present in at least
two aspects.
