Class Lecture Proper:


The concept of metacognition is commonly defined as “Thinking about thinking” ((Wimpton). It
is awareness of the scope and limitations of your current knowledge and skills. Metacognition enables a
person adapt their existing knowledge and skills to approach a learning task, seeking for the optimum
results of the learning experience. Some people learn better when they like the subject, some when
challenged by the topic, others if they have a reward system each time they finish a task. Emotional
state and motivation of a person then should also be in the preferred ideal state for that person in order
to further facilitate her or his learning, there are 3 metacognitive knowledge variables, namely; task
variable which is the nature of the task, as well as what strategies the task requires; and strategy
variables which refers to what strategies or skills you already have in dealing with certain taks.

Skills that can help you in exercising metacognition

1. Know your limit


2. Modifying your approach
3. Skimming
4. Rehearsing
5. Self test

Other strategies:

1. Asking questions about your methods, self reflection


2. Finding a mentor or a support group
3. Thinking out loud
4. Welcoming errors as learning experience
5. Have a more positive attitude towards mistakes
6. Venture into a new and unknown learning experience
Tips that we can use in studying

1. Make an outline on the things you want to learn, the things you are reading or doing, or the
things you remember.
2. Break down the task in smaller or more manageable details
3. Integrate variations in your schedules and learning experience
- Change reading materials every hour
- Do not put similar topics together
- Include physical activities in your planning
4. Try to incubate your ideas
5. Revise, summarize, take down notes
6. Engage what you have learned

final week, all your subjects provided at least 3 new reading material and topics one week before the

studying techniques mentioned in this lesson or how you would prepare for the next 7 days before your
finals.

Lesson 2 – Do not just dream, make it happen

Objectives:

1. Use Banduras self efficacy theory for self assessment


2. Differentiate growth and fixed mindset by Durech
3. Design personal goals adapting Locke’s goal setting theory

Class Lecture proper:

AlbertE. Banduras’ Self-efficacy theory believed that social modelling is a very effective way of
learning. Social learning theory focuses on what people learn from observing and interacting with other
people. It stated that people are active participants in their environment. On the other hand, Carol S.
Durecks has another theory which is the fixed and growth mindset. The theory believed that people who
believe that success are based on their innate abilities have a fixed “mindset” of intelligence, whereas
people who believe that success is based on hard works, training and perseverance have “growth
method” of intelligence.

Another theorist contributor is Edwin A. Locke’s Goal setting theory that presented 7 research
findings;

1. The more difficult the goal, the greater the achievements


2. The most specific or explicit the goal, the more precise performance is regulated
3. Goals that are both specific and difficult lead to highest performance
4. Commitment to goals is most critical when goals are specific and difficult
5. Goal setting is most effective when there is feedback that shows progress in relation to the goal
6. Goal setting mediates the effect of knowledge of past performance or subsequent performance
7. Goals stimulates planning in general
