Application of Euler’s Formula

4. A solid round bar 3 m long and 5 m in diameter is used as a strut with both ends hinged.
Determine the crippling (or collapsing) load. Take E= 2.0 x 105 N/mm2.Find the
crippling load for the below given condition.
a) One end of the strut is fixed and the other end is free
b) Both the ends of strut are fixed
c) One end is fixed and other is hinged.

5. A column of timber section 15 cm x 20 cm is 6 metre long both ends being fixed. If the
Young's modulus for timber = 17.5 kN/mm2, determine:
d) Crippling load and
e) Safe load for the column if factor of safety = 3

6. A simply supported beam of length 4 metre is subjected to a uniformly distributed load of

30 kN / m over the whole span and deflects 15 mm at the centre. Determine the crippling
loads when this beam is used as a column with the following conditions:
(i) one end fixed and other end hinged
(ii) both the ends pin jointed.

7. A hollow mild steel tube 5 m long, 4 cm internal diameter and 5 mm thick is used as a
strut with both ends hinged. Find the crippling load and safe load taking factor of safety
as 3. Taking E = 2 x 105 N/mm2

8. Calculate the safe compressive load on a hollow cast iron column (one end rigidly fixed
and other hinged) of 15 cm external diameter, 10 cm internal diameter and 10 m in
length. Use Euler's formula with a factor of safety of 5 and E = 95 kN/mm2.

9. A 2-m-long pin-ended column with a square cross section is to be made of wood.

Assuming E = 13 GPa, σall = 12 MPa, and using a factor of safety of 2.5 to calculate
Euler’s critical load for buckling, determine the size of the cross section if the column is
to safely support (a) a 100-kN load, (b) a 200-kN load.
Euler’s Formula in different cross-sections

10. Determine Euler's crippling load for an l-section joint 40 cm x 20 cm x1 cm and 5m long
which is used as a strut with both ends fixed. Take Young's modulus for the joint as 2.1 x 105
N/mm2.

11. Determine the crippling load for a T-section of dimensions 10 cm. x10 cm x2 cm and of
length 5 m when it is used as strut with both of its ends hinged. Take Young's modulus, E =
2.0x105 N/mm2.
Application of Rankine’s Formula

16. The external and internal diameter of a hollow cast iron column is 5 cm and 4 cm respectively. If the length
of this column is 3 m and both of its ends are fixed, determine the crippling load using Rankine's formula. Take
the values of σc = 550 N/mm2 and a = in Rankine's formula.

17. A hollow cylindrical cast iron column is 4 m long with both ends fixed. Determine the minimum diameter
of the column if it has to carry a safe load of 250 kN with a factor of safety of 5. Take the internal diameter
as 0.8 times the external diameter. Take σc = 550 N/mm2 and a = 1/1600 in Rankine's formula.

18. A 1.5 m long column has a circular cross-section of 5 cm diameter. One of the ends of the column is fixed in
direction and position and other end is free. Taking factor of safety as 3, calculate the safe load using:. (a)
Rankine's formula, take yield stress, σc = 560 N/mm2 and a = 1/1600 for pinned ends. (b) Euler's formula,
Young's modulus for C.I. = 1.2 x 105 N/mm2.

19. A column of circular section is subjected to a load of 120 kN. The load is parallel to the axis but eccentric
by an amount of 2.5 mm. The external and internal diameters of the columns are 60 mm and 50 mm
respectively. If both the ends of the column are hinged and column is 2.1 m long, then determine the

20. Find the Euler crushing load for a hollow cylindrical cast iron column 15 cm external diameter and 25 mm
thick if it is 6 m long and is hinged at both ends. Take E = 8 X 10 4 N/mm2. Compare the load with the
crushing load as given by the Rankine's formula, taking σc = 550 N/mm2 and a = 1/1600.For what length of
the column would these two formulae give the same crushing load?
