CHAPTER 1

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The teacher’s personality and competence are essential to effective teaching.

They plan their work carefully in order to come up with a good result. They
established their goals; making sure they have something to work for. Their first and
foremost concern is the interest and welfare of the pupils.
The role of teachers is to be transmitters of the knowledge and developers of
desirable characteristics and values. According to schuman (1994). Knowledge of
the subject matter and a linking for the subjects as well as the learners are among
the qualities of the good teachers. Good teachers are more knowledgeable and
understanding than other average people.
In order to carry-out their goals, teachers should engage in large number of
instructional and related activities inside and outside the classroom. The effective
organization of these activities would require that a teacher possess a certain
amount of knowledge and also certain attitudes and skills. This is known as teaching
competence. In other words, teaching competence refers to” the right way here
includes knowledge, application and skills to pupils”. The right way here includes
knowledge of content. Any definition of teaching competence depends on teaching in
a particular setting, the culture values held in the community. It also depends on the
innumerable teacher and pupil’s characteristic and the classroom context. The
effectiveness or ineffectiveness of teaching is closely link to teaching competence.
Competent teacher would also create classroom conditions and climate, which are
conducive for pupils learning.
Teaching competency has various dimensions such as content knowledge,
instructional planning, student motivation, presentation and communication skills,
evaluation competencies and classroom management skills. While the teacher would
require all these dimensions to a reasonable extent, it is the manifestation of these in
an integrated manner that makes him/her effective in a classroom context.
Hence, this study hopes to evaluate the level of teaching competence among
the Tagbina Central Elementary School Faculty.
