Reactions on Holistic Approaches to Learning

The holistic education concept—the philosophy of educating the whole

person, beyond core academics—is gaining steam in learning circles as

schools struggle to improve student outcomes. Many organizations are

realizing that students need more than just a strong foundation in a core

curriculum, they also need to be supported by a community and to develop

a compassionate understanding of the world around them.

Holistic education is a comprehensive approach to teaching where

educators seek to address the emotional, social, ethical, and academic

needs of students in an integrated learning format. Emphasis is placed on

positive school environments and providing whole-child supports (services

that support academic and nonacademic needs, also known as

wraparound supports) to students.

Students are taught to reflect on their actions and how they impact the

global and local community, as well as how to learn from the community

around them. Teachers often engage students in projects that apply critical-

thinking skills toward solving real-world problems.

Reactions on Hands on Teaching for Concrete Learning

An important part of the definition of hands-on has to include manipulatives,

or realistic concrete representations, in the activity that helps the student

construct the concept and explain the concept with the manipulatives or

concrete representation in a meaningful way.

Hands-on is more than just an activity. In fact, it is more than just a process, it

is a way of teaching and learning with meaningful representations.

The conditions that are necessary for an experience to be hands-on must:

Focus the student’s attention on both the present activity and connect that

information to information from the students’ past experiences in their own

lives. Without this, the information will not be connected and a fragile

memory will be created at best.

Encourage mental reflection on the full power of what the representations

mean conceptually. The thinking isn't situated in their hands it must be in their

minds. They must construct a mental representation that accurately

represents the ideas.

Relate to a clearly defined conceptual goal (concept) that can be defined

operationally with a range of possible student outcome levels.

Reactions on Collaborative and Cooperative Learning

Cooperative Learning and Collaborative Learning are commonly used in

group activities aimed to attain a common objective. In collaborative

learning, it is the students who organize their efforts among themselves. In short,

it is group structured. On the other side, in cooperative learning, students are

divided into groups and the teacher assigns specific roles and tasks to each

student, and so it is a teacher-structured activity.

Reactions on Bite-sized Learning

Microlearning or bite-sized learning is a teaching strategy to deliver content in

small, very focused chunks. Just like food, you don't want to stuff your

stomach with a lot of food that would be hard to digest. You would eat some

now and some later once you're hungry and ready to eat again.

Bite-sized learning is as simple as it sounds: breaking down e-learning content

into digestible chunks, which is easier for learners to work through at a pace

that suits them. Also known as microlearning, it makes it much easier for

learners to fit into their busy schedules.

Bite-size forms of assessment such as topical tests, short writing, reading and

performance tasks will be used to provide your child with more opportunities

to experience success and build his/her confidence and desire to learn

Reactions on Experiential Learning

Learning by doing. This is the basis for the experiential learning theory.

Experiential learning focuses on the idea that the best ways to learn things is

by actually having experiences. Those experiences then stick out in your mind

and help you retain information and remember facts

Experiential learning theory differs from cognitive and behavioral theories in

that cognitive theories emphasize the role of mental processes while

behavioral theories ignore the possible role of subjective experience in the

learning process.

Reactions on Mastery-Based Grading

Mastery-based grading is a system for assessing students while

promoting deeper learning. Instead of earning a certain score or letter grade

and moving on to a new curriculum, mastery-based grading gives learners the

time and flexibility to focus on mastering a standard.

The purpose of standards-based grading is to give a clearer picture of a

student’s learning progress. Instead of a traditional points gradebook where

you see a single letter grade, an SBG report card gives a detailed view of

student strengths and weaknesses. Traditional grading communicates on a

high level, whereas standards-based grading provides detailed and

actionable insights.
